New Member Got Questions About Gears..

Hello everyone, just joined and have questions already. I'm going to be changing my stock gears to 4.10's and had some questions. For starters what are the minimum tools needed for the job, here is what I have come up with :

1/2" Beam Style Torque Wrench $16 shipped
STANDARD MAGNETIC BASE 1" DIAL INDICATOR $25 shipped
6" Precision Dial Caliper 0.001" Calipers Shock Proof $18 shipped
1/2" DRIVE TORQUE WRENCH CLICKER CLICK ADJUSTABLE $30 shipped
BEARING SEPARATOR HD PROFESSIONAL TOOL $15 shipped

Thats a total of about $110. Hopefully I can get rid of some in that list that are not really needed.

Second questions: are the motive bearing kits good or should I get a Ford kit, my Gears are Ford Racing gears but I was planning on getting this kit: http://www.americanmuscle.com/rearendrebuild.html

Third: how heavy oil should I get, 75w90 or 75w140. My car currently has 100k miles (01 GT, Automatic)

Thanks in advance.

Well MR Boogy, you might brush up on a few more articles before you attack this. I have set up diffs for a living on race cars and street cars and you can be in trouble if not careful. I am not fully familiar with these diffs yet but they could alos have shims on the sides by the carrier bearings. Now what is in the car may be enough or too many depends. Hopefully the gearset will come with recomended backlash settings. You want to get these as symetrical (close to each other) as you can. It is pain staking sometimes but it will keep the gears from being overly noisy and wearing in on spot (hot spoting) Here is a good page with some info. Gear ratio's vs eng RPM, Shows contact patterns and what to look for, just good info all the way around. You are going to put new bearings in right? Youll need some red locktite too for the ring gear bolts, dont want them babies to work loose. Good luck it aint rocket science but it takes time.

Personally, I havent done an 8.8 swap. However, if you dont do it right, its almost certain that the gears are going to whine. Install is just 50-75 bucks more, so why not do it right the first time?

A gear swap is about the only thing I would do myself. Every other mod on my list was at home save for the gear swap. Not saying you shouldn't try it but just make sure you know what you are getting in to.
