My piston rings are bad, and I am in the process of calculating cost for engine, trans. parts etc.

I would like to do a 331 or 347 with a beefed up/new AODE.

I was thinking about just doing a gear swap and new bearings etc, but would it be a good idea to also upgrade to 31 spline axles?

Car will be street driven, maybe see track 2-3 times on street tires.

Thanks.

Very good time to step up to a 31 spline unit. You can get a F150 tloc fairly cheap and do an extra clutch rebuild to get a stronger 31 spline posi unit for cheap. If your going to pull the center out anyway to get the gears on/off might as well upgrade. Also a set of Superior axles is what I would go with. It should be do-able for $500 or less depending on cost of gears and the F150 tloc. It is exactly what I plan on doing to my axle. but I fear the t5 needs upgrading before the rear...so funds are being saved for an astro/Gforce gearset.

I think just going with stronger axles will be a plus. From what I have heard/read/been told its the weight that is a big deal for rears. Our 94-95's are not THAT much fatter than fox's (200-300lbs or so) but it all gets put on the axle. I would at very least upgrade to some aftermarket 28spline units...

You might as well.

My set-up is the following and this is what I would do again if I had to:

stange 31 spline axles and screw in studs
cobra 31 spline diff (carbon fiber friction plate)
ford racing girdle

I got it all for about $625 new.

not to throw off topic but are the cobra diffs better than regular ones because i hate goin around a right handed turn and only the one tire spinning... left hand is fine but not the other way around doesnt work too well

I only difference I know about is that the Cobra diff uses carbon fiber clutch packs. How that makes it better I'm not sure, but I had a lot of people recommend the Cobra diff and I got a really good deal on it.
