Best "bang for the buck" upgrades are exhaust, a cone filter on the VAM, and a boost controller.

It's not a roller motor, people swap to the ranger roller cam because it's a cheap way to get a roller cam. Honestly it's no better than the stock turbo cam, but it is a cheap way to get roller followers if you want to upgrade to a better aftermarket roller cam (I went that route).

I don't know my SVO's really well, but I believe on your car there's no real need to swap out the ECU and VAM. You should have the big VAM already and 36 lb injectors.

Also, are you sure you're not thinking of log-style exhaust manifolds? Those are pretty common.

That is just a big tubular plenum mounted on a stock lower manifold. I can't really tell from the picture, but it looks like an inline intake(all the runners are in a row). The square intakes started in the mid '85 model year, so that's what an '86 would have also.

Arguably, Ford's best 2.3 turbo computer was the L-series like the LA3, LB2, etc. The P-series from the SVOs were good as well, so I wouldn't make it a top priority to swap.

As far as mods, what is your definition of "simple?" The simplest IMO are a boost controller, adjustable fuel pressure regulator, and maybe a fuel pump. Going from there would be a front mount intercooler and 3" exhaust.
