TFI Manual vs Automatic

Ok, car wont start, gettin fuel, cranking but no spark. I cant find a spare TFI around to test, and the only ones available at AutoZone, Oreillys and Advanced are for Automatic trans and my car is a manual...what the heck!!! Will an auto work? I just wanna see if thats the problem or not...oh, its on a 90LX 5.0 with a manual. Any ideas?

hey, i just posted a tfi thread a few threads down. i wasn't asked if i had an auto or manual tranny. i also didnt know they were color coded either which my instructions clearly stated there was a difference. maybe thats what your issue is. i typed what the instructions said a few threads down.

If you take the module to the parts store they can test it for you and tell you if it's bad or not.

The autos and sticks had the same TFI. Early cars had grey push start TFI's and later EEC-IV cars had black CCD TFI's.

Even though there are different TFI part numbers for automatic and manual transmission setups starting with 1990 Mustangs (Motorcraft part #'s DY174 for M/T and DY1076 for A/T).....they continued to use the "push-start" wiring setup until 1993 for both transmission setups. SN95's were the first Mustangs that used a different wiring configuration depending on the type of transmission, and had different color TFI modules as Hissin50 mentioned above.

the tfi i have on my car was white. would i use the grey to replace it or the blue? the one i got was grey and my car is stumbling hard with it.

if some of ya'll know about the colors, please take a look at my thread and shed some light. i don't care if its just another lead to trace, anything will help.

if some of ya'll know about the colors, please take a look at my thread and shed some light. i don't care if its just another lead to trace, anything will help.

Don't concentrate on the color of the TFI module make sure you get the correct part number for your application.

well, as long as the auto parts place gave me the correct part, thats what i intended on. but the instructions were specific regarding color so thats why i ask. what you are saying is disregard something that obviously matters to the manufacturer and thats not sound advice. of course i'm going to purchase the right parts number. anyone else with a clue?
