Ok last nite i get a call from the shop doing my Header install and exhaust install..He called saying i needed motor mounts no big deal..I got him some energy suspension mounts...So i wanted him to elimate the air pump so i bought an air pump delete pulley..He had said when he opened the hood the car look like spaghetti under there with all the vac lines and hoses so he was going to get rid of the unwanted and un-needed wires and hoses..So he also told me there is a computer that controls the timing on the dist? in the kick panel i didnt know that...I thought 85 Gt's didnt have a computer..so he said thats going to be gone too..He is going to make the car like a 1975 302 lol....since its carb anyways I was wondering why my car wasnt running right he said maybe this box wasnt working...So did anyone ever hear of that????

Just tell him to finish the exhaust, install the air pump delete kit, and give you the car back. If you are unsure of what he will be doing, don't let him touch it because he is talking you into something. I don't know a lot about carbs, but just tell him you want him to adjust the carb and return the car to you.

Yeah i bascially told him to get rid of the air pump and all the unwanted vac lines and thats whats he doing the only thing he is taking upon himself is the computer that controls the Dist....which im going to be installing a set of H/C/I soon so i wanted the engine compartment cleaned up and i wanted the car very simple so im guessing thats why he doing this...And he is no dud...lol he is the most reputable mustng shop in this area...That is all he does is Mustangs him and his son Race them,I know tons of people that use him with no problems....I was just curious about the computer thing in the kick panel never knew i had one....

There is NO computer in an carbed 85 GT, unless it has or had fuel injection. Some of the 85 models that came out later in the year did have fuel injection. Are you sure the carb and intake are original?
Also if he is pulling the smog pump make sure that the holes in the back of the heads are plugged. If he didn't mention this I would have my doubts about his expertise.
And the last thing you want is for your engine to look like a 1975 302. 1970 maybe. Its hard to find people that know much about carbs these days. So when I hear a statement like that I figure this expert is pretty young.

Yea he mentioned pluging the wholes in the back of the heads....He isnt young hes about in his 50's thats all he every worked on was ford...He used to work at a dealer..he owns his own shop for many years now...He knows what hes doing....The car is an 85..he is telling me the computer is for emissions it controls the dist advance or timing....or something like that for emissons...The car is bone stock with 69,000 miles on it i put an edelbrock carb on recently...I dont think it was fuel injectioned...I was the one who told him to clean the engine compartment its terrible with all those wires and Vac lines...And i said 75 302 im sure he means make it look like an early 302 with a intake, carb headers, and so on Basic....lol

I got rid of all the smog stuff on mine because hardly any of it worked, my smog pump was seized, and the car had a hollowed out cat when I bought it anyhow. If you have to pass smog where you are, you are going to have problems getting rid of this stuff. I also went with an aftermarket carb and intake without EGR. My engine compartment does look more like a 60's car than an 80's car, there are minimal things that could cause vaccum leaks, and it's much easier to work on now. But it smells like a 60's car too. That stuff was there for a reason.

Still don't understand why he's saying there is a computer in your car. Sounds like he is confusing the ignition box for a computer. Either way that needs to stay if you plan on using your original or even an MSD distributor. I would suggest replacing the stock ignition box with an MSD6.

Well on another forum a person just posted that there is a computer type box in the kick panel that works with emissons stuff and some A/C controls... so now im confused he did say that that box does control Emission stuff.. Im pretty sure this person working on my car does know what hes talking about im not questioning his work ablity i was just asking about that box....thats all...lol

this my friends is why i do all my own work

Well i used to do all my own work but i have no place to do it anymore being that i live in an apartment and have no place to lay the car up...And its not like i took it to someone who has no idea what hes doing...I trust him i wasnt questioning him ...I was asking what the box does its funcition ...Now i know what it does so im ok with him taking it out....I have seen his work its very good...He builds top notch cars ...He know his ***** .....

The "computer" you speak of is pretty rudimentary, but it does reside in the kick panel of your car, and is actually a computer. What it does is all emissions related. The '85 is a bit of an oddball car for many reasons (that you're probably already familiar with), but not in a bad way, necessarily. The "computer" handles cold idle control and the like, and is almost completely dependent on vacuum input, and conversely handles almost all functions through vacuum modulation. It's not critical to making the car run, but was just about the only way to handle all the tasks required of it to make the car emissions compliant. I left mine in the car to have it control the thermactor system since I kept cats on the car. My EGR is inop, and I removed thermal control of my vacuum advance, but at least I'm still pumping air into my cats to help with reducing that "60's car smell" you reference, while preserving them from destruction due to lack of air for conversion. Up to you....

That box is not a computer, I don't know why it is ever called that. It doesn't act as anything but a switch. It can't do complicated and precise electrical measurements or anything. It's just a stinking switch box.
