Will the Mustang survive?

Europe is VERY VERY VERY urban. The US is VERY VERY VERY VERY SUB-urban. We drive so much more it's not even funny. I don't want to say that we need to become Europe, but we do need to take a few steps to become more urban or more independent of oil. Instead of driving to go to lunch, pack your lunch and stay at the office or walk down the street to the restaurant to get something to eat instead of driving. It's not all supply and demand, but it is a part of the oil prices and less supply = more surplus in the world and gas prices will fall. I mean, if the US were to stop buying gas completely I would bet money that oil would drop to $10 a gallon or less because of the amount of surplus in oil there would be.

If we spent the hundreds of billions of dollars from the past few wars we fought (Might actually be in the trillions) on public transportation and other important infrastructure our country would be amazing. But as for now we are resorting to nothing more than the modern version of riding our horse and buggy down the ol' dusty trail.

And as for oil prices, did anyone see Mahmoud's comment to OPEC that the current price of oil does not reflect the supply and demand. Demand is slightly down, and the oil companies are actually sitting on a surplus. They are pumping more than we are buying. He openly said that the reason the price of oil is so high is that there are political and economic forces at play that are trying to purposefully collapse the economies of certain countries and that it is un-called for. All of that from the guy who's country is the worlds 4th largest oil exporter.

He wants OPEC to evaluate the corruption amongst their people and take corrective action to restore the price of oil to where it should appropriately be and stop experimenting with the worlds economy.

EUROPE also has free health care, and also the average daily commute in Europe is less than 5 miles.

GT badgeing belongs on nothing but V8, do away with it, it better be getting a new name. I don't care if my electric car has 400hp, and gets 100 mpg. It won't make the little kids cry, when i step on it pulling out of my driveway.

I had one kid cover his ears and yell "THATS WAS AWESOME" all at the same time.!!
lol

V8,4Life

You don't care about the v8 because you drive a v6.... .

This might be true.

Still, it would seem to me that people like the V8 because of the power it gives... not simply because they like the number 8. Yet Ford claims that its EcoBoost V6 gets better MPG and MORE POWER than the current 4.6 V8.

Therefore, why the hell would you still go with a V8?

I clearly don't get what the big attraction is, clearly, seeing as how I drive V6... like you pointed out. Maybe it's just something that you have to own to understand.

The combustion engine will be around for a long long time, it's too efficent. 4 dollar gas isn't the end of it all, it's a scam to rape us. We have oil in this country we haven't begun to tap yet, not to mention south america and canada. George W said yesterday that there was more oil in colordo shall, than in sudi arabia alone. All we need is some alternitive fuels to take the presure off of oil as the only source. Let the tree huggers and yuppies drive thier little electric cars and so fourth which will leave more oil for us and our V-8's. When there are more alternitives, the price will drop for oil as they will have to fight for your business against the other forms of energy. OPEC is allready freaking out and want the price of oil to drop, because they know that these high prices will accelerate alternitive fuel research and thier party is over. They want us to use oil for a long long time. There's at least a couple hundred years of oil reserves that we know of, so lets not panic. When we have other forms of energy, that 200 years of oil that we know of will strech to 500 years. And thats just the reserves we know of, there's still plenty more that we don't know of. I'm personally a big beliver in E-85, because by only using 15% oil and growing the other 85% can really strech a barrel of oil. I don't don't mean from corn either. I mean from saw grass, sugar beets, sugar cane or other sources. Corn is the worst thing to make E-85 out of as it's a source of food for people and livestock. When you have ample supplies of E-85, electric, bio diesel and hydrogen to name a few, there will be enough oil to swim in at decent prices. Were being pinched right now, but it won't last, so don't sell your V-8's just yet or write them off. What this will do, will make for a much more efficent V-8 a long with other gasoline engines, which is a good thing. It won't be long before we see 30 mpg V-8's at 400 hp. The question was ask, what difference it makes if it's a V-8 or a V-6 as long as it's high hp, I care. The V-8 is the standard that a muscle car lives by since it's inception, it's old school, it's tradition, but it's what it's all about. If it's not broken, don't fix it. Remember what your GT sounds like the next time a civic pulls up beside you and revs his engine, it's "sickening", is that what you want the future of muscle cars to sound like? The fast and the furious phase didn't stand the test of time, it allready dieing. The V-8 is still the king and has been for about 60 years since the first model T with a flat head V-8 rolled out of someone's shop and they called it a hot rod, "long may it live".

my buddy put cobra emblems and a duel exhaust and cobra rims on his V-6 and it still is a V-6. and i make fun of him for it every day i see him, because it looks like a v-6 from every angle.

The worst part is it is a black car and he did all this a few days after i bought my black cobra convertible, thank god i sold my cobra so i don't run the risk of accidently parking beside him.

What planet are you living on?
live on the earth in the greatest country in the universe. A place were nothing is impossible even making gas out of corn. The internal combustion engine will not go easily, and I think my grand kids will still be pumping oil from the ground. (and i don't even have kids yet :) There is alot of oil to be had yet and 130/barrel is really going to shack it loose.

Funny how this always turns toa v6 vs. v8 deal. As far as that goes, who cares what's under the hood...if it puts a smile on your face when you turn it on, then ENJOY IT without having to justify it.

Back to the topic, the Mustang won't die. It has a strong following and Ford needs the car in their line-up for its North American customers. Outside of this country, Ford actually has many vehicles that are very gas efficient. For example, in Brazil (where I'm from), we have cars that can run on BOTH ethanol and gasoline. You pick which one you want to use when you pull up to the gas station. With that being said, those cars won't be sold here because first the U.S doesn't have the supply of ethanol we have there, and secondly, people here don't like to drive small cars.

I personally love all Mustangs, but to me, a Mustang should ALWAYS have a v8 engine option because that's what it was built upon. Even if the v8 dies, the car won't die, it will just change.

Oh and btw, I'm loving my new GT/CS...Ford did a hell of a job with these S197s!!!!

Ya, I saw on TV where Barzil has been using ethanol since the 74 embargo and make it from sugar beets, or was it sugar cane, one or the other at anyrate. Brazil is a good example of what can be done with grown fuels for the combustion engine, now throw in electric and hydrogen and a barrel of oil will go a long way. It wouldn't bother me to drive an electric car to work everyday as long as I had my stang and it's comustion V-8 for the weekends. Lets face it, toy's need gas, it it be an atv, dirt bike, speed boat or race car, but for work or shopping, it could run on beer for all I care. Now with all these high gas prices we find out that were still standing on more oil than there is in the whole middle east right here at home. Having oil isn't the problem, paying for it is, so we need to drill, drill, drill and stop providing the terrorist with weapons money. I guess we've been hording our oil for a rainy day and it's getting pretty cloudy.

I love the sound of a good V8 engine and the retro feel it can evoke, however I'm not against trying something completely different for a change. Take Ford of Australia for example they got a killer lineup with their Ford Performance Vehicles division (www.fpv.com.au) which offers two engines for their Falcon series a 4.0L Inline 6 Turbo and a 5.4L DOHC V8. The I6 with its high displacement and boost has slightly better performance (but not much) then the 5.4L unit despite it being the "entry level". I wouldn't be against seeing those options in the next generation Mustangs everyone can be happy that way.

(the IRS would be nice too :) )

the whole gas crisis is bull... I just read an article in my local newspaper saying that they found atleast 40 billion barrels of oil in Montana or North Dakota that the US oil company's aren't even trying to get. there is also a lot left in Alaska and Canada from what I've been reading too. I don't think this whole "gas shortage" will last.

To chime in on the gas issue, I've read a while back that Soy will yield gasoline which will require no modification to our fuel systems and is even higher octane then what you normally find at the pump.

I'd go with that.

Sure there's oil in montana and n. dakota, as well as a alaska, east coast, wast coast and colorodo. George W said there is more shall oil in ccolorodo than there is oil in sudia arabia. We have a 200 year supply under our feet that they know about, not to mention how much more that they don't know about. Take that 200 year supply, add electric, hydrogen, bio-diesel to name a few to the mix, now you have a 500 year supply. Throw in wind, nuclear and solar and were really not so bad off. We've been sleeping at the wheel depending on others for our energy, our enemies no less. We have our own, it's time to go after it. Obama says drive less and conserve, sell the suv as not to piss off the rein deeer. Screw that, I strive to drive. I do believe we need to conserve, but not opec's oil, we need to conserve our own, so lets go get it so we can conserve it. I'm tired of giving terrorist money to buy weapons to blow us up with. Let the middle east drink thier stinkin oil, it's time to drill, drill , drill!!!!!

To Ranger04 the top post on this page.

The combustion engine is not efficient at all. On average about 80% of the energy from the fuel goes out the tailpipe and that is starting from the gas in the fuel tank. If you look at the big picture, starting from getting the oil out of the ground, using gas doesn't make much since at all. Excluding the big oil fields in the Middle East and looking at off shore drilling, and places like the Canada with the oil in the shall, it takes about 3/4 of a gallon of gas to get one gallon out and that is being conservative. Than you have to transport that crude oil to a refinery (more fuel used), refine the oil into gas/diesel (more energy), than transport that to gas stations (more fuel). In no way is that efficient

Most of the big oil fields that are in operation are expected to reach peak production in the the next 5 years if they haven't already reached their peak production. Our global demand for oil is expected to reach around 135 million gallons or barrells/day in a few years and our supply will peak at about 100-110 million gallons or barrells/day. Oil companies are having a very hard time finding oil to keep up with demand and it is getting harder b/c the easy fields are gone and all that is left are small fields or fields that cost a fortune to extract the oil from. So yes there is a lot of oil left, but the key is how accessible and economical is it to get it out of the ground.

I believe the combustion engine will be around for at least another 30 years, but we won't see cheap fuel again. Sure people might be willing to pay $8-10/gallon and drive a muscle car, but will the there be such strict regulations on fuel economy and emissions that will knock out the big engines?

As other alternatives come online, that won't have much of an effect on oil prices b/c of places like India and China want to catch up to the US. They will drive the demand for oil up even if the US's demand shrinks considerably.
