Power Steering Pump Toast!

On my way home from work today my power steering pump locked up and busted the pulley right off the pump. Luckily I was only a few blocks from home when it happened. Somehow the power steering belt was just laying there under the radiator when I pulled in the driveway! So anyways, if I want to drive without the power steering hooked up until I can get a new pump will I need to do anything for this to work without messing up my new tie rods and suspension parts? Can I just drive as is without removing or changing out any parts?

When I bought my car the PO said the power steering pump had not been hooked up for the 3 years or so he owned the car. I drove the car for 6mos before finally buying a pump and hooking it up. When I did it worked fine. At speed it isn't even that bad, but parking lots and parallel parking will give you a workout.

Then welcome to the gun show! Any ideas why the pump locked up? Had plenty of fluid and belt tension was normal. So I can just leave the hoses and everything hooked up minus pulley and belt...

I've had mine both ways. I think I prefer leaving the pump in minus the pulley and belts with the hoses hooked up. Seems like there would be less chance of dirt getting into the system that way, but like I said, the PO didn't have it hooked up for 3 years and all I did was install a pump and go.
