Hi guys this is my first post here. I have a 95 gt convertible. And I get wicked knocking and pinging in the 3000 - 3500rpm range. The engine is stock and I am running 91 octane from chevron or union 76 (all the other brands make it ping worse.) If I add ether the NOS octane booster or a couple of the other brands the ping goes away. I have tried adjusting the distributor with no real effect(meaning it runs ok on just the 91 octane with one of the cheap octane boosters poured in) however the old problem has come back. Has anyone else had this problem and how do I fix it.

Check your ignition coil.. I had the same problem and replaced the factory coil with a MSD coil and the problem disappeared! Of course, this was after two sets of wires, a distributor, a TFI module, a custom chip....

Definitely timing that's too far advanced or retarded. Have you checked what your timing is actually set at? It should be at 10* BTDC (before top dead center). If you don't have a timing light, go ahead and pick one up.

Few things to try -

1. Mobil gas, they are generally ranked the highest in avg. rating. They are actually the highest on avg. and OVER the sticker rating more often than any other brand.

2. Check the harmonic bal. It is very common that the inner rubber ring will start working itself out (you can see it by looking at the HB). This is a cause of the outer ring spinning from the inner ring and if you checked/reset your timing it will be off...as the outer ring is not were it shoudl be.

3. Is your EGR hooked up and working properly? At mid load the EGR timing tables are in the 40+ range so if there is an error it will cause a ping.

4. Try cleaning the maf. A dirty maf has caused many a retarded headache and tail chaising adventure.

5. Remove the picture of Mr. Clarkson from your Av. the bad vibes are pissing off the mustang. I find him funny and love Top Gear but man do they just not get american style performance, I like and get the Euro idea of sports cars and handling...but I also realise its not the ONLY way to judge.

Thanks for all the tips I will look into all those. Though I do know the harmonic balancer was replaced a few years ago. I will check it out.
As for the Top Gear guys. Clarkson and Hammond like the Mustang. Hell, Hammond owns a '68 gt390 mustang. Anyway thanks for the tips.:D
