Do computer need replaced?

Number six cylinder in my 01 GT vert is not firing and the mechanic has been able to determine the wiring harness is working fine but the computer is not sending the impulse. He is telling me the computer needs to be replaced and is trying to do so with a used one, which is fine if it works and saves me money.

I've never heard of this problem before and am wondering if anyone else has. Is it possible that the existing computer just needs to be reflashed?

Ok, I'm a smart azz. but on a serious note, it seems that used computers flashed for the latest available program is the way to go. My processor went bad (long story)and Ford wanted $500 for a new one. I found a shop that obtained a use done, reflashed it and wrote a chip for it and dyno tuned it all for $750. It's been in there for over 2 years now.

It's possible that the injector driver circuit inside the PCM has burned up/shorted out. It may not be common, but it does happen.

If it were me, I'd make sure the mechanic understood that if it did not fix the problem, I would not be paying for PCM replacement.

To answer your actual question, I don't see a reflash of your current PCM fixing the misfire if it is in fact the computer.

Well, that's good to know. He checked the injector, in fact the first thing he did was swapped out a new injector but when that didn't fix it he put the old one back in. He actually had the injector wired directly to the computer and tested that it was not sending any impulse so he's sure its the computer...I had just never heard of this problem before and wanted to make sure it can happen.

He's pretty resourceful and likes to save his customers money...the one he bought didn't work and he's sending it back. Waiting on another.
