Over Heating

Hey guys i am in need of some help. I have a 90 lx with the 5.0 in it my car is running anywhere from 220-230 on the water temp i know this is to hot ive changed the water pump and thermostat to a 180 my Clutch fan is two years old and seem to be working fine i have no water in the oil but im running autolight double plats plugs ive heard that they make the car run hot. Timing is at 12 BTC So i ask you guys what will make my car run Really hot??? Oh i have a auto meter temp gauge not that stock gauge crap.

Does it run hotter while cruising (40 mph+) or while going very slow or stopped?

Where is the sending unit mounted?

Double plats, while not the perfect plug for a 5.0, won't make it run that hot.

Is the fan clutch too loose? Grab it by hand (with engine off) and give it a spin. It should resist you and stop immediately. If it freewheels or spins very easy than the clutch is worn.

What's the condition of the rad? Is it full of gunk? How are the fins? When was the last time the coolant was flushed? If you live where it never gets very cold you can run a 75/25 mix of distilled water to coolant and add water wetter.

usually cooling issues are caused by an airflow issues (bad fan clutch, fins blocked, air deflector missing, etc) or a heat transfer issue (clogged fins, poor rad condition, bad coolant mix)

I havent flushed the system yet the rad was rebuilt 2 years ago i live in the desert here in cali so it get's 100 + but also get's butt cold here also. I have stock pulleys the fins look ok but my air deflector broke so i took it off. The new gauge is in the intake mani where the stock sensor would go i just got off of work. The temp stayed at 190 intill i parked at the donut shop then on the way home it started getting hot again. And the only time it run's hot is when im ether ideing or cruising 40 + Im gonna try to flush it today but there is some slimey crap in the rad so im hopeing thats my prob thanks for the info ill update this later today. Ps. ill post pic's Later today

I would go with an electric fan setup, sounds to me like your not getting enough CFM to keep the motor cool. This is very common on start/stop's, it needs more air to cool. Also, as stated above if you are running underdrive pullies, take them off. These cause the waterpump to turn slower, causing overheating. Good Luck!

Drop your timing back to 10* just so we can eliminate any timing issues. Put the air dam back on because it is used to create a negative pressure right behind the radiator while driving at speed. There isn't much of an opening to "force" air through the radiator on these cars. If you are overheating at idle, it also implies that your fan is not pulling enough air which would lead us to suspect the fan clutch could be bad.

Ok i have to go to the junk yard this weekend and see if i can find a good one as far as the fan clutch goes ill also replace that. im chargeing my camara now so ill take pics of the rad and stuff thanks for the info guys Ill update this in the morning

Was it running hot before you replaced the water pump? If not you could have wrong rotation pump, V belt turns backwards from one with serpentine belt and you might have a defective pump impeller on the new pump. And if you want to run without a T stat find a washer the size of the T stat with a 1" hole and it will restrict the water to keep you up to temp. And to the opinions from the other guys keep em cause I have been doing this since most of you were thought about.
