Tax evasion if you fill up your boat or jetski at the car gas pump?

A friend told me that at my work and it seems kinda true, a way to keep raping you by the high prices of the marina gas, any truth to this? I'm about to fill my ski up with the trailer instead of hauling back and forth 5 gallon containers but I rather not if it's "against the law"

My family always filled our boat up at the gas station (on dry land). Can't be any different than you filling that 5 gal. can. The gas at marinas has to be higher because they have a monopoly on the water, "they have it, you don't" situation. Fill er' up at the gas station.

yea sorry meant to say evasion

for anyone with a boat they know how much more it is from a marina, especially when you got to fill up like a 50 gallon tank

One reason is they only have one grade (that ive seen anyway) which is premium and my jetski doesn't need premium, and I think some have different blends and there could be some kinda tax or something.

but anyway anybody know the low down on able to fill up on the trailer at the car pumps?

There is no federal law prohibiting the use of "ordinary" gasoline in an aquatic vehicle. I would be surprised if there were any state or local laws prohibiting such an act, but when considering some of the asinine laws we have nowadays I suppose I shouldn't be. As mentioned earlier, the marinas are able to charge a higher price because once you're out on the water and need to fill up, there is only one place you can get your gas. Two things drive prices on the free market: demand and scarcity. Gas stations are certainly scarce on the water.

I used to work at a marina. The reason the gas there is more expensive (aside from the monopoly theory) is because marinas don't sell as much gas, so they can't buy it in quantities large enough to receive the lower prices for buying in "bulk" (consider the winter months where they wouldn't sell near as much gas). That and IIRC, regulations with selling gas near open water are tighter.

ALSO, a lot of boats and PWC used to use mix gas, and a good percentage of those boats are still on the water (boats typically have a longer usable life span than cars). Mix gas is special order. Of course the new ones are now going to oil injection or 4-stroke engines.

Lastly, a good percentage of boats have high-compression engines, and cant use low-grade. So if they only have one storage tank, why wouldn't they choose to supply premium?

Anyway...
If it is illegal to full up at the gas station, we never got busted. We do it all the time.

You mean the public is not allowed to pump gas into their own car?

Nope. Every station must be full serve and to be hired to pump gas you need to be trained for 8 hours and certified.

NJ rejects self-service gas

I think it's silly. I've only gone to self-serve stations. When i was a kid, some guy at a full serve hit my car with the nozzle and put a huge scratch in it. Ever since i've pumped my own gas. It's not hard. You just lift the damn lever and pull the handle. :nonono:

Oregon is the only other state that bans self-serve

Well I dunno... it sorta makes sense. There are a lot of helpless people out there who cannot be relied upon to do the right thing. The government is right to step in and tell people what they can and cannot do. Obviously if they require an 8-hour class in order to pump gas, it MUST be difficult and we have most likely all been doing it wrong all these years.

Thank you Uncle Sam! :flag:

Anything is possible in New Jersey...remember they can't even pump their own gas.

Yep, and in most cases, you guys pay more for the privilige of pumping your own gas. I like sitting in my car with the heat/ac on listening to tunes while paying some of the lowest gas prices in the country.:p FWIW, I pumped gas in NJ and never took any 8 hr certification class. At more than one gas station. You sure about that? Also, it's been 17 years since I pumped gas.

You mean the public is not allowed to pump gas into their own car?

yea, they won't let you pump the gas into your car, UNLESS you got a motorcycle or something like that, you're probably not supposed to but every biker does it around here, I do it for my dirtbikes and quads and to see how rough some people are shoving the nozzle into the tanks, I wouldn't let em fill my bikes cuz they would scratch the tank or leak gas all over it or something

If you own a motorcycle you are allowed to pumo your own gas.

I'd imagine it be pretty awkward to pull up to a gas station, stay on the bike and have the attendant reach between your legs, unscrew the cap and shove the nozzle in there. Might make for some interesting small talk as well.

Here most people that trailer their boats an pwc's fuel up on the way there. When I was a kid Ohio went to self serve during the big oil shortage to lower the price. You can find a few full serve places here but you have to look hard since it's like 30 cents a gallon more. The stations like you to get out an pump your own so you go in a buy drinks an stuff.
