What year/vehicles can i get a roller 351W out of?

My car still has it's entire interior in it except the stereo. Carpet, interior panels, heater, etc. All still there. If I wanted to take some weight out, it would be nothing to get it in to the 28xx range.

I didn't go to any great lengths to make my car any lighter and the windsor doesn't carry enough extra weight to give a hoot about. after the aluminum heads, I'm pretty sure it breaks even with an iron headed 302. I can't see there being a 95lbs difference. The block is like an extra 20lbs and even though it's a stroker, the crank doesn't weigh 3x more :nice:

With the tubular suspension, trunk mounted battery etc....my handling isn't exactly suffering either. Unless you are making a purpouse built road course car, the windsor's greater cubes is > than the 302's weight advantage. I'll gladly trade an extra 1.5-2% over all weight of my car for an extra 15%+ displacement advantage. Seems like a no-brainer.

Well, to be fair....the Cobra R had all the smog, A/C, back seat and everything else that wasn't nailed down removed to attempt to offset the additional weight incurred by the 351W up front.....it didn't even come with a radio for god sakes. :D It’s fine if you don’t have a problem with it, but me being in my early-30’s, I certainly wouldn’t consider giving up my creature comforts or smog legality in any street car to improve handling, just to shave off a few pounds that really don’t need to be there in the first place. Either way, it although it was quite a performer compared to the stock GT of that era and most certainly one of the coolest Stangs built in the last 30-years, it isn’t really considered anything special handling or performance wise by today’s standards? I mean…what did it run.....mid-13’s?

As for the S-351...it was certainly a mover and a shaker, but probably the furthest thing from “run of the mill” there was at the time. Point being, there was a lot more done to that car than just a motor swap. The suspension and chassis and brakes were worked over from one end to the other to compensate for the additional front end weight…not to mention a ton of weight reduction done to get that supercharged hog down under 3,400lbs. Great thinking on Saleens part, but at $55,000 10+ years ago it certainly came at a price.

Not to mention if I recall correctly, even with almost 500hp on tap the car was only good for mid/high-12’s. Not slow by any means, but certainly not impossible to duplicate with the smaller, lighter 302. Especially if it was fitted with a blower like the S-351 was. :)

If you are reffering to the 1993 Cobra R, it had a 302 in it. They removed that stuff to lighten the car, yes, but not to offset the weight of a 351, but they did have a 351 in the 95 Cobra R.

I was referring to the '95 R....I doubt many people are even aware there was a '93 R, since they were so limited in production. I don't recall them being a whole lot different than the regular '93 Cobra were they? Same engine configuration and horsepower, stripped interior and Tri-Bar wheels with a black center cap was pretty much it, was it not?

Yea it used the future model year's ('94) 5-lug setup for those wheels. Other than the stripped interior, I can't remember what was different. Strut tower brace? Stuff like that? Anyways, thats wayyyyyy OT... 351 FTMFW! :nice:

Ultimately for me it comes down to cheap power. I'm not saying it's the best option for everybody, but for me i don't have to worry about emissions and i can put on 100lbs and not even notice it's there. I can get a 351 for as little as $300 and throw my heads and cam on it, buy an intake, headers and an oil pan and get an extra 50ci for next to nothing. I don't have the cash to build a 347 so that's just not an option...and if i did have the cash to build a stroker, it just makes more sense to me to build 410ci than 347ci.
