Fan hitting shroud

I just put in a new fan shroud for my 1967 mustang to help cool it down but whenever I accelerate the fan hits the shroud right under the top radiator hose. Is this a cracked motor mount or something else? Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks

Did you have an existing shroud you replaced or is this a new installation? My 67 did the same thing. I think the previous owner used the wrong motor mounts, 67's had their own specific mounts. You could try to space your fan closer to the motor and see if that helps.

As I understood it from an earlier post titled "motor mount hell" (IIRC) as well as the Mustangs Unlimited website, there is some difference between the convertible and hardtop motor mounts for late '65 through '68. The fan on my convertible '67 has slapped the shroud for years after I pulled the engine, but I had first thought it was just that the shroud had cracked and deformed in storage. I used some coat hanger to pull the top of the shroud away from the fan blade -- has worked fine for moving the car around the garage. Still I'd like to fix it.

Here's what I don't understand: The MU site says the correct mount for these convertibles is the "tall" mount, but if that is the case, then why is my fan hitting the shroud at the top? I would think that the wrong/"short" mount might make it hit at bottom. I suppose it could be a matter of pitch, where the taller mount would pull the top a bit back with plenty of clearance at the bottom. It could also be that my problem is indeed the shroud.

cmb68d, what body style is yours?

The 67's had a different bracket and different mount than the 68's. If someone has changed the motor in the past and used the incorrect mounts then that could be the problem. If you get 68 mounting brackets and motor mounts you should be fine according to all that I have read. I have not tried this, but have seen it in a ton of posts. I am going to buy adjustable mounts when I put my motor back in my 67 so I don't run into this problem.

There is some leeway on how much you can move shroud back and forth. Mine was hitting after I changed my radiator out. Started car and reved up and slide back and forth a little until hitting was done. May need to ream holes in radiator where it mounts up. I'd do that before I'd starting messing with motor mounts

Another thing to check is your fan size. If you just added a shroud to a car that did not previously have one and the previous owner installed a larger fan then that could be your problem. I can't remember the size of what the fan should be, seems like 17 inches. I had the same problem years ago, bought a steel fan that was an inch or two smaller from summit racing and spaced it closer to the radiator, half in and half out of the shroud and my problem went away. It ran cooler than the larger fan and no shroud set up.
