tranny options for 400lb of torque

I have been reading a lot about different types of trannys. The TKO seems to be favorite.

What tranny are you guys running who have 400+ torque? MY ol t5 will give out soon and wanted some opinions on them.

I know there are more options out there than just the TKO but I have not really found any distinguishing information about the others. What are my other options??

What are pros and cons of each? Do some fit better than others? Just curious about that sort of info. Lets here some opinions!

thanks:nice:

I have both the G force t5 and a tko. I pefer the g force.

The problem with the tko is it doesnt like high rpm shifting.

Now the g force t5 I have is a dog ring set up I dont know how their synchro'd trannys shift but the dog ring set up although noisy (sometimes bang's going into gear this is normal) never misses a shift, I mean never!!!!

I have heard mixed things about the TKO not liking high rpm shifts and other things of that nature.

I also read about how the dog ring set up on the Gforce does not like to tolerate dyno pulls because there can not be any wheel spin?

I like the sound of the Gforce T5. How much do they charge? Is it a DIY thing or do they install?

thanks
Eric

If your lookin for a decent street/strip tranny. I would recommend the TKO 3550, the older ones liked to be driven harder than the new TKO500/600 do.

The synchros are weak in the 500/600's and tend to break, plus a different shifting technique must be used to get it into 3rd. If I were to do it again I would dog ring the 2,3,4 gears. Leave 1 & 5 alone as you want regular synchros to downshift into first and you won't be powershifting into 5th(usually).

Never herd anything about the dog ring and dyno pulls. On my 65 fastback I have the straight cut gear'd gforce dog ring it has done a total of 6 dyno pulls no problems. On my 88 saleen I have the helical cut gear'd dog ring box and It has been to seven dyno days and has been dyno tuned 3 times so it probably has well over a dozen dyno pulls with no problems

The g force kit can be done at home in your garage and isnt really that hard, you will need acess to a press. I did my first one the hardest pard was clearencing the tail shaft for the .90 over drive. It has been 4 years now they dont have any instructions!!! It will appear overwelming at first but it is prety self explanitary I would suggest you let them do it if you havent torn down a t-5 and rebuilt it Chris

I had a 95GT with HCI and a P-600B Procharger pushing 12 psi through a 3 core intercooler and a stock T5 transmission. It shifted like butter for the entire time I had it, and I bought the car like that. I had to put a clutch in it because the stock one gave out at 35K. The transmission was perfect though. I would do it again for sure.

I don't have 400ft/lb but i beat the snot out of my 3550 and haven't had any major problems yet. Sometimes it doesn't wanna go into 3rd but for some reason that only lasts a few minutes and it goes away.

svt 32 I had a brand new t5 (the z) behind my 408 for a full year with no problems, but the day I installed the maximum motorsports 3 link torque arm I lost third gear!! This was on my first trip around the block with the new rear suspension. On tear down the gear on the counter shaft had no teeth left it sheared all the teeth off third gear!
