i did a tune up with motorcarft plugs about 1000 miles ago. i was always getting this mpg so it cant be the cai i will change out the fuel filter this weekend. also i dont know to much about the handheld tuners is there one that would fup my gas miles that much (just in chace the old owner used one?)

Check your tire pressures? How do you drive? What RPM do you shift at? DO you tend to hold the car in a lower gear to keep RPM's up? Do you have non stock wheels + tires on?

Check engine light on?

10MPG is pretty bad. There are days when i've gone through a whole tank pretty much at WOT and still got better fuel economy than that.

acetone

I can get some decent MPG 23 + tires 36 lb, like the guy said new fuel filter every 6 months ........... 2 0z acetone per full tank , I have a 99 GT automatic the sticks get a few extra MPG , fresh Mobile 1 , passed the 140,000 over a year ago , the acetone is a big help & never caused any problems the guy who started the thread you sound like you need a new fuel pump check the out put if its low your will never get good mpg a high spray gives you better MPG ....all in all I always thought the 5.0 was a better motor but a late model 4.6 can be just as good they need good oil & regular changes I think they can get into the 300,000 range if taken care of ... :nice:

today i changed the fuel filter it wasnt 2 bad just a lil gray. also its an automatic . the air filter is new and it looks like the tank was droped not to long ago(bolts look like a wrench was used) no check egine light and no pending codes. 32 psi on stock bullits with bigestone tires. its a 12 gallon tank on a 02 gt cause thats i could ever put?

It's a 15.4 gallon tank.

You prob have a few gallons left when your low fuel light comes on.

I've gone as much as putting 14.8 gallons in once when i decided to play "Bluff the low fuel light" one day when i couldn't find a gas station to save my life.

How are you measuring your economy then?

Do this

Go fill your tank at a regular gas station you usually go to. Top the tank off and hit your trip reset button.

Drive around, when it gets to 1/4 tank, go back to SAME gas station and go to SAME pump. Fill your tank again and then divide the mileage by the gallons used.

Do this a few times, and remember to use the same pump each time. Reason being different gas pump nozzle shut off at different times. You may go to one that tops your tank off, but go to another one that shuts it off 3/4 gallon sooner.

There are other factors here, like driving different routes and having a head or tailwind on the highway than can sway your numbers, but we can ignore them.

I just find it tough to beleive you are getting 10MPG without something mechanically wrong.

I checked my mileage once, out of curiousity.

On the highway (coming back from Pittsburgh), it got about 21mpg. When I get it out and drive it, it's been getting 12-13. It's all due to my right foot, and the fact I really don't care about mileage. ;)

City traffic, especially that city, could absolutely murder anything that resembles "economy". Pretty simple really, if you're not moving but your engine is running, you're probably not going to have very good numbers.

If mine was my primary vehicle, I'd be doing things differently. Having a company vehicle has certain advantages.

So i just got back from a long road trip. The stang avg 20-21 MPG both ways. I was doing avg 75MPH, always above 70 for sure, sometimes hitting 80+. Granted I just istalled some stock replacement NGK platinum plugs. Daily driving I have not yet checked out what im getting on the MPG cause I really dont care. Car is paid off and MPG is irrelevant, but I am curious to find out what its getting.

man you have a 175 gallon tank! I bet you never have to stop for gas! :rlaugh:

Man where can I get one of those!! I bet that does not help for weight reduction. lol

But seriously, about 8 mpg is pretty bad. something is going wrong. I get about 18 mpg with my 3.73's. Hate driving on the freeway because I don't like to keep the rpm's at 3000 all the time....

i get 25.6 highway if i only get on it a few times.

i do believe i will pick up a few from deleting hydro boost/power steering. i havent driven it since ripping it all out. a few small things to do.

there is a remarkable amount of space with hydro-boost gone. even with a 5.4 3v.

I just checked my mileage yesterday 135.2 / 5.603 and honest 24 mpg out of an auto in stop and go traffic, I believe, is respectable.

The key is not to drag race up to the next stopped line that is only 50 feet away; people are such idiots.
