Hey all,
Finally bit the bullet and got my dream engine ordered from TandL / T&L. Well, my crazy-but-not-insane dream engine. Dream engine would probably be a Roush 402IR-AL. I don't have the build sheet yet, just a build sheet from an original quote over a year ago, but they estimate about 500-525 with 9.0-9.5 compression to run lower octane gas for now and do a power adder if I ever go crazy later.
I have been impressed by their customer service in terms of response time to questions and accuracy of answers, and they're smart and well-spoken. They correctly pointed out that the March kit I planned to put on wasn't correct for 351w - the 30385 kit should be correct for 351w with alt, PS, standard rotation water pump.
Until I get a build sheet, I only have the older one to go on, but they would use a JE dished piston with 4.125 bore with 3.750 stroke for this.
Still need aluminum radiator with dual Spal fan, trunk battery relocation kit, fuel delivery system from Mass-Flo, Hedman 88300 headers, hydraulic clutch kit, (probably, 67efi has me convinced but one other with a cable clutch was able to do it without converting) air cleaner, pro-motorsports shock tower reinforcement kit, and Ron Morris adjustable motor mount.
Is Pro-Motorsports still in business, or where can you get their shock tower kit? The site has been down for at least a day.
I'll update this thread as things develop. Lead time is at least two months, but I was actually prepared for as long as a year, so I might actually have a beast by next spring!
My original 302 will sit in the garage as an engine rebuild project for me to learn a few things . . . or maybe an E-85 conversion?
Getting excited. I have everything I need to stop, shift, a 9"/TrueTrac rear, handle, and now I can finally get around to the "go" part of things. :flag: :SNSign:

That will be awesome!
It's light weight, so handling will be great. Lot's of power and torque. Wow, pretty darned cool!
Check NPD, they have both the Pro-Motorsports bumpsteer kit, and *a* shock tower reinforcement kit (not sure that the shock tower kit is Pro Motorsports though, so I would ask).

66, thanks for the NPD tip - I'll check them out right now. Maybe get a battery relocation kit from them at the same time as I do the shock tower reinforcement.

68EFI, thanks! I replied to one of your other threads that I'm using the McLeod scattershield and I can let you know if I have any issues with my setup and the 88300 headers. Thanks for the header advice, again - wouldn't be anywhere near as confident of fit without it!

Just ordered the Summit/Northern radiator SUM-380463 with the '70 style crossflow passenger side inlet and driver's outlet and Flex-a-Lite low profile 2,500cm Dual 12" fan to go with it - FLX-210 . I want to make sure everything's here when the engine is ready, in case there are any backorder issues.

Ron Morris adjustable motor mounts are in my future, too, and I'll do the motor drop option if it helps clearance at all.

I'm still up in the air about a hydraulic clutch. I might see if the cable clutch interferes at all. The adjustability of the Ron Morris kit might give me some wiggle room.

Pro-Motorsports/Dr Gas is still in business but they have merged their two sites into one under the Dr Gas name, here's a link to the shock tower kit on their site.

they also still have all of their other stuff there as well

. . . you forgot "brakes to stop it"

:D
Sounds awesome! Now I just hope you also have the chassis, suspension, transmission, rear end, drive shaft, u'joints, axles, etc, to handle all this extra power.

The current drive shaft and U-joints will be replaced with cromoly, that's the only thing really left to do. The TKO600 in my sig, Currie Track 9" rear, TrueTrac diff, 31 spline axles, should handle it. Rear is the EvM 3-Link, w/Watt's so it should be stout and the 3-Link adds a few structural members that help out with rear end rigidity, and an anti-sway bar.

The chassis, though a convertible, has Tin Man Fabrications subframes welded through the convertible subfloor and welded to that convertible piece so there is basically a giant "T" brace connecting both front and rear subframes and rockers. Full engine bracing kit is done, but I'm not above adding something more rigid like the Maier or Global West shock tower kit. And I am doing the Pro-Motorsports (via NPD) shock tower reinforcement kit. If it was good enough for the '70 Boss 302 Trans-Am winner, I want it on my car. I did the Boss 302 crossbrace from Trans-Am Racing as well that links the two lower control arm pickups.

If I ever get it on race slicks on a track, I'll make sure to get a video and see how much chassis twist there is, then I would add jacking rails between subframe and rockers and some front end reinforcement outside the engine bay, since it is a convertible. But I have a lot of hurdles if I want to drag race this, since it is a convertible . . .

"10.83 with a MILD 408"!? Nice work Jasonn!

Enough.

what was the total cost on the engine?

Let's just say it's a labor of love I've had half my life. T&L is very competitive in price with a similar setup from anyone else, and they are a Mass-Flo EFI approved builder, and I get a year warranty, so I'm happy. I think I just gave an economic stimulus package to the great state of North Carolina, though. :flag:

I do still envy the Chebby guys that don't have to pay what we do for an engine while reppin' the Blue Oval.

Got Pro-Motorsports' kit from NPD

Thanks for clearing it up Bnickel . . . and hope you don't mind the crosspost to 69stang.com. It's a big, big event in the build and I wanted to share it. I ended up ordering from NPD yesterday at about the same price, and NPD in SoCal has always treated me well. They're who I think of first when I pick up the phone for parts.

Summit shipped the radiator, fan, and Hedman headers same-day, and delivery from Sparks, NV to here is only a day with regular shipping, apparently. Nice operation they have if you're shipping to Cali.

:D

Wow, this sounds like a hell of a nice setup! :nice:

well if the chassis does end up doing the Twist on ya you could always buy my 69 GT coupe and add all your goodies to it :D

'70 Twister Special?

if the chassis doesn't hold up (not that I'm running the grippiest rubber back there) maybe I'll get the Twister Special logos for it. :D

re: the '69 GT, naw, that's a real GT in the last year for 'em. You wouldn't want to molest it with all these goodies, right? :p Not just a regular 302-2bbl (deluxe) convertible, 76B body style. This is my one-and-only project - you've got a few, right?

well at the moment i have one completed car and one project car that i can't start working on until the other is sold, that would be the 69 GT. much as i hate to sell it we really need the money for a down payment on a house and also the rest of the money from the sale of the GT will go to the 69 cougar

Buy low, sell high

Heh, it's a good time to buy. I'm watching my home value go down and just riding it out. I'm not in trouble by any means, but it's a bad time to own anything and a great time to buy. Analysts are saying AAPL and FSLR are good buys, but I'm by no means an expert and don't even dabble . . .
