Boss Block to buy or not to buy?

Help me decide:

I have SRP 40 pistons, Eagle H beam rods, Eagle crank, Good stuff in my stock block...stroke not sure of? Victor Jr heads. I want to put this in a BOSS 302 Block my buddy has.

I have a friend who has a brand new BOSS block....he machined it to accept the stock spyder hold downs from a roller. $1500 Should I buy it? and will my stuff work in it?

what esle Would I need to buy? Balancer? Flywheel? Etc?

the boss block is a great foundation to build on and can handle plenty of abuse when filled with quality internals, just can't go too big with the stroke or so I've heard because the bores are shorter than the factory block. maybe someone else can chime in on this

Like I said in Talk, from my research, the shortened bore isn't supposed to have any negative effect on reliability, longevity, or power potential. Its been getting a bad rep, but I have yet to hear anyone say that their engine failed because of the shorter bore. I'm not an engine builder though, so maybe someone will step up with personal experience.

If I wasn't so set on eventually building a big-cube Windsor, I'd rock one.

I would buy it, but for less than $1500 if i was you.
Downs ford by me has them on ebay for $1600.
And when you buy something and take it home, inherently you lose money.
Give him $1350 for it.
As far as his machining costs for the spider, that's his problem.

Just so you are aware, it's not going to be as simple as dropping your rotating assembly in the engine.
It will all have to goto the machine shop together, tolerances on every engine are different.

It is a great block.. however I feel it can be a huge overkill if you are not going to be at the 500-600 HP range. then you have 1500.00 MORE into your engine that COULD be spent else where, yes?? $1500.00 is a LOT of add'l mods.. like Suspension/ tires ect!!

Pulling a lot of power out of stock unites is a reality with the s/c or turbo kits out there, however under 400-475 Wheel HP the stock blocks are holding up fine!! Just a thought...

Stock block/ stock rotating assy/ ported Stock Heads and 450 WHP and 500 Tq @ 5000 rpm is an ass kicking dailey driver that has the potential to but low11's high 10 sec qtr mile ET's. and the block is holding.

Just me..........................................

Was reading some 5.0mustang today, in the q&a section in the back, they addressed the rumors about the block not being good for a 347 stroker.
According to the info, the boss is perfectly good for a 347, you just don't need pistons with long skirts.

I read that same article, but when I mentioned it (in a different thread) someone said something to the effect of "don't believe everything you read in magazines" and poo-pooed it but then gave no solid evidence against it. I've since done more research on it myself, and I have yet to hear any real horror stories regarding the shorter bore length. Like I said before, I think its just a bad rumor, and I'll keep having faith in 'ol Blue until I hear a good reason to do otherwise. :nice:

While i'll agree you can't believe all articles from magazines, this one had more to do with facts and statistics than it did opinion. It gave reasons why a 347 could be done, and a reason why they removed the excess material. I'll assume those who dissagreed with you, never read it, they just spewed out the comment about not believing magazines.
