Installed Hurst Comp Plus Shifter

Now that I've got the MGW I wonder how much of the Hurst rattling is caused by the e-brake?

My Hurst rattled...then I installed the MGW and it was silent for a day then started rattling worse than the Hurst. After completing the MGW "e-brake rattle fix" with some Dynamat the rattle is completely gone (it was my e-brake handle).

Regardless...my Hurst is on fleabay now and it's only selling for $100 w/ free postage and 3 days to go :(
 
Well, I can tell you that the Hurst's shifter rattling is the shifter handle itself, not the e-brake. I had a buddy who had this problem with his and we installed mine so we thought we'd try to put some Dynamat on his to fix it. No luck, nothing. It might work for the people who the e-brake is rattling but there are a lot of people who the shifter is rattling.
 
well it is a little noisy.. but my thoughts on that are if i wanted a quite noiseless car i would have gotten a ford taurus lol this is a muscle car it makes noices its elegance isn't refined but it will run a 13.00 in the quarter!! lol
 
i have a hurst and it rattles like crazy........any fixes?

Actually, the rattle of the hurst just started to get to me today. I was trying to listen to the muffler, but cant hear it over the hurst. I took off the shaft and wrapped some silicon tape around the base, and then reinstalled. This did help to some extent, I think I need to also wrap the top, as the remaining rattle now seem to come from the ball.
 
yup, that is exactly what I am dealing with. I did wrap the top with the silicon tape, and it helped a bit more, but the rattle is still there. It is not nearly as bad as before, but now that I have attempted to fix it, It will probably bother me until I can eliminate it completely.

I'll post again if I am able to find some sort of solution.

Hey, I'm not trying to poke fun at your misfortune or turn this thread into another MGW vs Hurst thread (there's already one of those started) but rattles and difficulty shifting into gear can get really freakin' old when you're driving your car to work every day. Don't feel bad...I had a Hurst myself and although it looked fantastic and I liked the location and height of the knob I got sick of it and stopped having "fun" after about two weeks :(

When you hear the rattle grab the e-brake handle and squeeze it to see if the rattle goes away...maybe you'll get lucky and it will be the e-brake instead of the shifter (I could have sworn my e-brake rattle was coming from the shifter mechanism until I found out it was really the handle).

yup, that sounds like something I said. It was honestly fun for awhile there. Now, I still love the shifter, and it feel great, I never have any trouble finding the gears.... I just got it in my head to fix the rattle and now it sort of buggin me. I think I can fix it with tape, and maybe it is the e-brake. I am not yet regretting the Hurst over the MGW, that will only happen if I fail to fix the rattle. I'll keep posting.
 
i have no noise coming from my mgw shifter and i didnt do the ebrake mod. must be the shifter or the installer... :shrug:

but as far as noises go, if you dont like noises coming from your car i doubt you should be putting offroad midpipes, axlebacks, superchargers/turbos and gears in your car if you want a whisper quiet machine. But thats my .02. If you mod it, it is going to make noise. No ifs ands or buts. But then again, i dont really know the how bad the 'rattle' noise is. I'm just refering to the old sn95 days when people would complain about gear grind after a shifter install.

I think that's flawed logic...there are plenty of possible vibration noise sources on any car and just because YOUR e-brake wasn't noisy YET doesn't mean that someone else isn't experiencing the problem or that you might not experience it in the future.

If the problem didn't exist MGW wouldn't have come up with a fix.

I experienced vibration noise with my Hurst then after installing the MGW it starting vibrating badly as well. It sounded like it was coming from the shifter or the handle, and I could grab the knob and it seemed to reduce the noise somewhat. In reality it turned out to be the e-brake handle vibrating LOUDLY at high RPMs. I installed the Dynamat MGW fix and the vibration noise completely went away.

I think with a short throw shifter vibration is more easily transmitted through the transmission hump and console to the brake handle (due to poly bushings and/or less flexible design as w/ the MGW) and it's more of a problem; just my theory.

Anyway, the vibration wasn't caused by the shifter or installer! :mad:

And btw, i have seen people saying they had vibrations coming from a shifter install and just had to take it out and reinstall and double check their work.

Also my car specifically is an 08, so they might have changed something in the ebrake handle coming from 05-to present. :shrug:

No need to take a breather.....I'm not irked and hopefully you're not either...

FWIW you have a point...and you could be 100% right; it could be the Hurst shifter or a bad install.

I'm just saying that I can say 100% for sure (due to my own personal experience) that it can be caused by the e-brake and when the e-brake rattles it sounds exactly like it's coming from the shifter or knob. I'd hate to see some guy pull his shifter and reinstall it to have the noise return, or to sell a perfectly good Hurst shifter to find out it was the e-brake all along.

My car's an '08 as well with under 2K miles on the odometer so my guess is that any car could be affected.
 
I think Steeda had on their catalog (the paper version) an insulator you could sandwich between the handle and the base that was supposed to cut down noise on most shifters with the two bolts like the Hurst or their Tri-Ax. It was only a few bucks I often thought about getting it myself. Fortunately my Hust rattles only at high RPM's in low gears so I can't complain too much.
