How much can a built 8.8 handle?

Im starting to prepare my car for my future power plans ( 6.2L 2v with Twin Turbos)

My question is what should i do for a rear end set up? Im getting mixed reviews about the 8.8 and that I should go with a 9"

If i built an a 8.8 with 31 spline axles, reinforced the torque boxes, and welded the axle tubes can it handle let say 1000+ HP? What else would be needed?

I really dont want to have to go through the hassle of swaping in a completely different rearend, but i need to know it can handle it. Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

I think you would need a fairly stiff chassis to handle 1000hp long term properly that the rear end it connected too. The body starts to tear apart at as little as 350whp on DR's and hard launches. This could be mitigated with lots of stiffing stuff and crazy roll cages which can add significant strength to the car.
 
there is a writeup on the net somewhere to keep the c-clip elimintators from leaking.. i'll see if i can find it

cage FTW.. i'm sure it would help out huge!.. like someone said, torque boxes will tear out on the first launch if you dont plate steel them bastards goooood
 
A friend of mine set the street radial track record in the 1000 ft. (7.80) on stock 28 spline axles, these rear ends are more tuff than people give them credit for. and you can't say he wasnt putting power down, he was cuting 1.39 60fts on STOCK axles. Throw some 31 spline axles, a good posi unit, C clip eliminators, and main girdle support and be done.

As for the OP question I wouldn't go with anything less than 33 spline axles/spool and C clip elminators for 1000RWHP if you plan on hitting it hard at the track. 31 spline axles are strong but not 1000RWHP strong on slicks. Get then tubes welded, even look at the CHE brace as additional insurance. Weld all the torque boxes and reinforcements would be optional insurance I suppose but I've seen cars making that kind of power not tear stock boxes if welded properly.
