2010 GT Tail Lights on an 2009 GT? Can it be done?

2010 GT Sequential Tail Light System on an 2009 GT? Can it be done?

Do we have any Ford insiders here that can shed light on this possibility?

I've been looking into the sequential tail lights (NO, NOT THE HOUSINGS) but I put it on hold since the 2010 has appeared with them. I figure if it's a do-able simple swap of a few parts then I'd rather wait & use Ford parts that are "supposed to be there". However I'm going to guess that it will be something linked to computer controlled modules instead of a harness & flasher like the aftermarket systems.

well if you're talking about just the electronics then I imagine it would be a possibility. Thats just a guess though. My guess is that it might end up being a bit harder than just getting an aftermarket setup, but I understand if you're going for OEM. You'll probably just have to wait until more people know more specifics. I mean, they're not even for sale yet!

I'm not talking about the lenses, just the sockets & harness. There's quite a few aftermarket systems out there using OEM Ford harnesses with their own electronics, but I'd rather have OEM Ford all the way.

I don't understand why you'd worry about something other than OEM? I have the CDC Dynamite Sticks in my 07 and they were super easy (10 minutes) to install, and they've been 100% perfectly reliable. Total plug'n'play, so if there's ever a problem, I can just reinstall the factory originals in 10 minutes' time.

Why go through all the hassle of retrofitting the 2010's into an 05-09 just for the sake of saying it's OEM parts, when they wouldn't be original equipment in the application you'd be using them in anyway?

I have the CDC's too (bought them from their office)....and I think they use an OEM harness...or the components at least. Looked identical to the OEM I pulled out.

Of course none of us know for sure, but I would bet the PCM does the work for sequential tail lights because the PCM controls everything on the '05-'09 cars. I mean everything.

Just get the CDC set up and don't be too anal about something like that IMO.

Because I prefer OEM. And again, I'm not talking about the housings, just the sequencing.

I'm going to put my money on ''it won't work'', but we'll see. Just keep in mind too, a lot of OEM parts are the bare minimum as far as quality goes. Lots of soft rubber and hard plastic, Mexican made wiring harnesses. If you are just worried about keeping the car stock or something even the 2010 parts are a no-no. Don't put to much value on the quality of the stock stuff if you get my drift.

The reason I'm almost sure this won't work is because I know the '05 wiring harness and electrical functions pretty darn well and the computer sees and controls every little detail of the car's electronics. Even the auto dimming of the interior lights, back up lights and everything is controlled by or goes through the computer. Knowing that about the '05-'09 stangs you would think that Ford has a fairly standard way of engineering these things. These cars don't have any circuit boards anywhere else except the smart junction box which isn't that smart at all. It's the PCM that has all of the control. That's how they keep the costs down these days. Maybe Ford just copied CDC's circuit and you'll get your way. We'll see in September or maybe sooner.

Keep in mind CDC uses OEM sockets and harness connectors. The only difference is CDC's wire quality is better than Ford's.

I prefer OEM too...but after installing sequentials in my car if I had it to do all over again I'd order the non-OEM harnesses and keep the old (OEM) ones in case you ever have to put it back to stock. I ordered the OEM modded harnesses and it just wasn't worth it.

We're talking about one foot of harness here that can be easily installed in 20 minutes (for both sides) and can just as easily be reversed if you want it back to stock.

Also, I wonder if the OEM (2010) harness lights up all three brake lights when stopping? The factory lights on the 05-09 only brighten the outer two lights where the sequential kit I bought lights up all three and it looks MUCH better IMO.

Lastly, the OEM 2010 part will no doubt cost $375 and only be available a year from now...

My guess is that the sequencing on the new ones (2010) will be controlled by the computer so it wouldn't work with the previous 05-09 Mustangs.

CDC All the way

I have had a solid year with the CDC sequentials and they are terrific. Easy to install and I like the added safety of the six lamps coming on with the brakes instead of the factory four. This feature really alerts driver behind me that I am stopping. The sequencing works four ways, turn signals, braking, hazards, and alarm arming. Price value, unique feature, and back to stock reversability make it a no brainer.

I must agree 100%. Just installed the CDC kit yesterday and its the slickest aftermarket product I've ever purchased! They actually use factory harnesses and all you do is swap bulbs over. The install took literally 5 mins per side and they look terrific. If you own a Mustang and haven't done this yet you are crazy!

MANY of the parts on all cars are NOT made by the manufacturer itself. They are sourced from "Suppliers". Being the 2010 isn't even for sale yet, who's to say that Ford doesn't go to CDC or Web Electronics (my brand that I'm totally satisfied with) to add the feature to the new Mustang. Hell, the show cars may have "after-market" sequencers installed now.

My car came from the factory with BFG tires, but that doesn't make it any less a Ford OEM part. Let us all not forget that OEM stands for Original Equipment Manufacturer and that all of the parts on every car are not manufactured by that company (Ford, GM, Toyota, etc.) itself.

Just my .02

OEM is also understood to be for a particular year(s) and styles.
Pinto headlights wouldn't be considerd OEM for a Mustang, and a '69 stang hood isn't OEM for the '09's.
This 2010 part will not be OEM for a 2009 stang.

I'm with the others.
Too much hassle for no reason.
