This is my 1st mustang and don't really know the technical stuff about them but,I'm gonna buy this 2002 Saleen 281(stock) from this guy I know and the car has the center exit exhaust & I've been looking at youtube to see how aftermarket exhaust sounds for the car and basically it really just sounds like a regular GT with exhaust work. I came across these two clips and these cars sound like Jr Ford GTs and made me want the car more lol. Do all saleens sound like this stock or are these modded exhaust wise?

If memory serves, during 2002 is when Saleen switched from Borla to MagnaFlow cat-back systems. Either system/vehicle has a rumble to them. I believe I like the Borlas.

I'm a fan of this video for sound.

If you want to change the sound, swap the factory Ford H-pipe for an aftermarket H or X.

More than likely, the center exit exhaust (and rear bumper cover) on this 2002 was owner installed, so you might already have an altered system if you buy this car.

P.S. Before you buy a car claiming to be a Saleen, write the complete Ford VIN down and the Saleen production number and contact Team Saleen. http://www.saleen.com/membership_info.asp

Ok cool I'll check out that info today when I test drive the car. So basically the center exhaust is already aftermarket? and where else can I find a aftermarket center exhaust for the car? lol I know I'm probably asking too many questions :D

Chicane Sport Tuning at one time offered a center exhaust conversion kit. Way back in the early part of this decade. They might still offer one.

If memory serves, a center exit bumper cover and the bent center exit pipes that looked like a Y. It required one to shorten the (cut) the tailpipes and slip the Y over both ends. I think that's how it worked.

The factory Magaflow center tailpipes from 2003-04 where more involved, but to my eye... these later factory center exit exhaust cars seemed to look cockeyed at the tips.

The 2002 E featured center exhaust, the 2003 HH cars and E, then the 2004 S/C, E and optional on the N/A cars.

Joe at Chicane pretty much developed that setup before he left Saleen, and a similar version was something he later arranged to sell through his shop, if I recall correctly.

The center exhaust didn't come on the saleen untill 03. The owner probabley did the swap after that. I had mine swapped with Bassani headers and x-pipe and they really gave it a nice rumble.

To clear this up 2 2002 Cars came with center exhaust.

Also 2 S351's in 99 came with center exhuast.

Also Saleen made the switch from Borla to Magnaflow about half way thorugh production in 02, it was after the cars numbered 400. But some earler cars did come with magnaflow, and some later cars came with Borla, due to stock stil on the shelf, so 02 is a toss up as to weather you have borla or magnaflow.

Alll 03+ cars came with magnaflow.

Also all 2002 + E cars had center exhaust.

Joe did help invent the center exhaust system. But the problem in 99 with the S351 was the exhuast was heating up the fuel comming back into the tank, as the 99 S351s were return fuel systems. The 99-04 S281's are returnless fuel systems, so the center exhuast dosent affect the fuel heating up cause it dosnt come back into the tank. The problem is not relly the fuel it self, but the fumes. IN 99 they used fans to cool the incomming fuel in the S351 so it would pass Epa tests. So the center exhuast only made it on to Steve's car #01, and I belive one other car, dont relly rember as it was so long ago. But if the center exhuast had been used the S351 would have never passed any epa tests, as the fuel would become too hot and expand. The fan setup used in the trunk was actully Joe's idea, and its purpose was too cool incomming fuel.

Correct, but he had help :)

and yes Chicane does sell this setup and has for quite a few years. The pipe's are larger then stock.

and to clear things up, cause i know this queston is comming. Some early prototype cars did use Borla Mufflers with center exhuast. The center pipes were make bu magnaflow as well as the tips. E cars had louvered tips. A few different designs were used to get a tip that Steve liked. Liz's car has one style, Steve's s281 E had another, and all other E cars had the louvered tips.
