i have a 79 mustang with a 5.0 in it and was wondering what would be a good intake manifold to get for a stock engine and should i keep it 2 barrel or move up to a 4 barrel also does my car have an egr valve and would it be hard to change it myself

EGR valve....exhaust gas recirculation valve.... pollution control device. does your car have one..it did when it left the factory. just about every car or truck manufactured from 1973 to present has or had an egr valve. can you change it yourself...two bolts and a vacuum line.

what about an intake carb combo from summit also what is an egr valve and does my car have one
Summit 03-0127 - Summit® Intake Manifold, Carburetor, and Air Cleaner Value Packs - summitracing.com
would this intake and carb work

That will work, and you won't need any more carb or intake than that on your engine until you change the cam and heads.

I'll second the comment about finding a stock '85 intake/carb though. You should be able to find that stuff used and in good condition for way less than the $450 that Summit wants for that combo.

I have a 79 Capri that I have had since 81 and it was bone stock with a Motorcraft 2v.

I added headers, a 4v and such. With the stock engine it still was not a powerhouse. It is about an 8.3 to 1 compression engine.

I used a Holley 300-30z intake that had egr and an 8005 600 cfm Holley. Put 150k miles on that combo. Kept all the vacuum switches and such.

Some things to consider: it probably has 2.47 rear gears, so you need to change gears to see much acceleration improvement. No overdrive so a gear change needs to consider how much highway driving you want to do. My r12 ac compressor does work well at higher rpms with the gears.

You will have to mod the air injection pipe if you want to retain it. Mine hit the new intake setup. I kept egr and the smog pump.

A good setup would be an 83-85 GT 4v intake and the supporting parts.

Edelbrock makes a Performer intake with an egr adapter.

You need to go to a full electric choke carb, you can use the original electric choke assist wire for that.

The brackets and cruise control can be tweeked and reinstalled.

A 4v carb will need a kickdown rod extension if you have a C4. In one incantation, it got 21 mpg highway with GT40 heads and 2.73 gears and the 4v.

Have you EVER seen a fast street car with a 2 barrel carb?

Do you count 11s as being fast?

Now granted, i'm not saying they're better otherwise i would run one...i'm just saying there are classes that only allow 2 barrel carbs (or used to be back in the day) and there are ways to tune a big 2 barrel so that you have just as much air and fuel at WOT as any 4 barrel would, so in the long run it doesn't make any difference how many barrels you have. Make sense? Also a LOT of oval track classes only allow 2 barrel carbs. It's their way of limiting power...but still, what's the difference between a 600cfm 4 barrel and a 600cfm 2 barrel?

Where have you ever seen a 11 second 2 barrel equiped car?You are talking 1/8 mile drag strip right ?You say it doesnt matter ,so why dont you try a 600cfm 2 barrel on your STREET car and see how it performs.I bet it runs like a slug compared to your current set up.Not flaming you ,but who in the hell would want a 2 barrel for a performance street car or race car(except if you HAVE to for a race class)?

i think that summit kit is a decent kit for a decent price. you could beat it with used 83-85 stuff. I picked up a used edelbrock performer rpm intake for $80 an a holley 600 4 barrel carb for $75 shipped off ebay. 83 - 85 4 barrel intakes are on ebay all the time for under $50 before shipping. You will need to change gears tho to feel any of the improvements. The 79 may have the odd ball 6.5 or 7" rear. I think you need atleast a 7.5 to move up ratios. if you go with the summit kit get a set of their mustang headers too.

Yea ,that summit kit is decent bu the 83-85 factory stuff should help out power,is cheap and can be put on a new engine when its time to swap.

Ok dude...look what i drive, do you think i came in here giving carb advice because i don't know what i'm talking about? Didn't i say earlier that they're not superior, otherwise i would run one? You gotta read what i type if you're gonna debate with me. You also need to read up on your carb history because there's been quite a few healthy 2 barrel carb engines in the past. I never said i recommend this guy to get a 2 barrel, i was merely making a point, and a VALID point at that. There are, in fact, plenty of 2 barrel options out there if one were so inclined to build it that way, and you CAN run just as fast as any 4 barrel if built and tuned right. It's all in the combo.
