From 4.6 to 5.0????

mmmm. a nice 5.4L from a F150 would be fun, but probably too much work. I remember seeing a build up in one of the Mustang Magazines. They didn't get awesome numbers, but they were still better then stock.

It would make great torque, but in N/A form, the horsepower wouldn't be all that spectacular. You really need forced induction and/or deep breathing to make horsepower with that engine. Also, he'd have to save up for a set of addapter plates for the 4.6L intake, unless he wanted to stick with the truck intake...in which case he'd need to save up for an aftermarket hood instead.

Then of course he'd also be adding weight to the front end.

Unless you have a 400HP+ 331 stroker sitting around already built, forget about a 5.0 swap. The cost of just swapping in a stock 200HP 5.0L engine will exceed what it would take for you to build a nice 4.6L.

Swap on some worked heads, aftermarket cams, PI intake, plenum and TB and do exhaust and you could have a nice SOHC right there. Then just add a blower.

5.0's are nice engines, but by today's standards, they blow ass. It takes a decent set of heads and cam just to get them up to what the new 4.6's are putting out. That's why i said unless you have a built 5.0 sitting around already...and by built i mean a stroker with AL heads and aftermarket everything on it, stick with your 4.6L

If i come across a good deal for a DOHC engine, i'm taking the 5.0 out of my Mustang and going modular.

Oh and 150 shot on a 5.0 is a lot. If it's a stock lower end it will go boom eventually.
 
A friend of mine did it. Only because he bought his 2001 with a bad motor. He sold the motor and tranny and used that towards a 94-95 5.0 donor car. He took what he needed from that and it was all a direct bolt in into his 2001 then sold the donor car. That would be the only way I would do it. I think all total he came in pretty cheap and he runs pretty decent at the track. Of course, he did some mods to get it running that well.

Didnt they have a rediculous cowl hood on it and still had to cut the top out to clear the intake manifold:shrug:

If its the same article i read...I beleive they yanked the engine out of a lightning and put it in a sn95:thinking:

May had to of cut a hole in the hood to clear the supercharger on that lightning engine...hell i dont know. Car had crazy power tho
 
Yeah...that was a lightning engine in a Fox (Project Frightening) with the 5" cowl with the hole through it. The N/A 5.4L will clear the stock New Edge hood line with the PI intake and adapter plates....although I'm not sure if it will clear the '96-'98? Either way, as billfisher stated, the PI intake doesn't have the deep breathing characteristics necessary to support the 5.4L volume. Great torque because of the added stroke, but no real increase in horsepower.
 
Guys... for the 5.4 swap, it is a pretty good and reasonable swap.

It bolts right in, no need to change the wire harness or anything. The largest mod is to widen your midpipe since the 5.4 is wider.

HPS has released a 4.6 to 5.4 intake that doesn't create the turbulant airflow that the adaptor plates do, and there is a guy that is working very hard to start selling longtubes specific to that swap.

The HP numbers are right around or a little above 4.6 numbers but the tourqe is usually 40-50lb ft. better from what I have read. And like said, with the new Trick Flow heads that will really let that engine take advantage of it's displacement.

I don't think the real issue with the PI intake is turbulence created by the adapter plates, it’s the lack of volume in the runners. The small diameter, long running intake set up works well with a smaller displacement 4.6L needing to maintain torque levels, but the 5.4L needs to breath. With the added stroke, torque isn't an issue any longer, so the long runners design isn't necessary (and adapter plates increase the runner length still), and actually constricts things on the top end to an extent. The real problem is that since there isn't enough material for porting, there's nothing that can really be done about increasing their volume and you've essentially got the proverbial "***** in the chain" so to speak. :(

A short runner intake like a P51 would really wake things up on a 5.4L, but they’re not cheap either and after factoring in the cost of the custom fuel rails needed, you’re over half way to the cost of a blower at that point. :shrug:

hey guys thanks for the help on the last thread i posted and you all are so right. i will be keeping my GT and it will be leaving the body shop with a cobra front bumper and head lights:nice:. Well i want to drop in a 5.0. the NPI 4.6 is way under power with out juice. i want to buy working 5.0 motor and put some gt40 heads, cams, mantifold and a 150 shot. i want to know if its worth it and what do i have to do to make it work.

What can you realistically afford to spend?

How high would you rate your mechanical skills and the quality of tools in which you have to work with?

This helps others to give realistic advice within your given capabilities.
 
alright guys thanks for your feed back. about my mechanical skills, well iv been around mustangs sence i was 5 years old so now you know and you wont have to comment something not true. ''this gose out to who ever sead it.'' the reson i dont want to rebuild my motor now is becuase i dont have that much money to spend sense im putting myself throug school. dont get me wrong thank you all so much for your help. iv learned alot and thanks.

my last question is will 99 heads off an expidition will work on my motor?? found a longblock with everything for 150. just want to know if it will work

Yes, they'll work but you'll need the valve covers from a '99-'00 Mustang. The Windsor and Romeo covers are different from one and other (11 valve cover bolts (R) vs. 13/14 valve cover bolts (W))...and the truck covers have the oil fill neck on the wrong side.
