4.6 head question

is the plug blowning out a big problem in our 4.6 heads ?
what years are more pron to it ?
is a compression ratio of 9.9.1/ >> 10/1 too high for stock heads? or is the problem just on supercharged motors ?

Yea its a pretty common problem. I believe its more previlent in the 99-mid 01's, but i'm not 100%. With a s/c'd application you would want a lower compression ratio than 10:1. A 9.5:1 is a better ratio. W/ nitrous a higher comp. is better but not so w/ boost.

as long as you install them correctly and dont go cheap on the plugs you should be fine.

i just finished a head swap a month or so ago and havent had any problems with the updated motorcraft plugs.

I did the PI Headswap on my '98 ('02 parts) on my daily driver at the time and was fine for over 20k. and still going fine.

Or buy new castings or any used 2004 head and it wont happen at all.

I had Timeserts installed in each plug hole in my new heads. I didn't want to have to deal with a blown out plug down the road.

Of course i plan on pushing 22+psi as well.

Stock or N/A, i wouldn't worry about it too much, otherwise, it's fairly cheap insurance to have the plug holes Timecerted or go with the new castings with full threads.

Before I sold mine, I put 35k miles on my '01 heads after the headswap. Roughly 10:1 compression (no bowl work) and never a hint of blowout.

Its one of those bull**** problems brought by morons who install the wrong plugs. I've been running over 11.5:1 compression for a few years now and havent had any issues.

and i would have to disagree with the idiot above me its not just the wrong plugs. mine were stockies and #4 blew out. of course mine had 104k on them. but it aint just people puttin wrong plugs in.

The problem is the number of threads in the plug hole. Ford's fix in 2004 was more threads. There just isn't enough threads on the earlier heads and sometimes it's just time that weakens them, or people over tightening them or the wrong plugs...they can all contribute to causing them to come out.

Crazystang, watch it with tossing around the personal insuts. That stuff doesn't fly around here. Don't start fights where they don't need to be started. Mogs....no need to go bat**** over something you read on the internet. Your point was well taken without flying off at the handle.

As Mogs stated...the right plugs will go a long way towards longevity. Even though they physically fit, you can't use the old AWSF style pugs we all ran in our 302's. You need the long shank AGSF (now designated SP-XXX) with additional thread for the mod heads.
