I recently bought an 87 GT with the AOD. The car shifts perfect and pulls hard in both first and second gear but turns to mush and slips in overdrive. It appears that the tv cable has been messed with before. I picked this car up for cheap and just want to have it as a toy. I'd rather not dump a bunch on money in it.

My questions are:

1) How likely is it that overdrive goes out but the other gears shift fine?
2) What would the results of a bad tv cable be?
3) Should there be tension on the tv cable itself?

Thanks in advance for any help/ideas you can offer.

The main problem with the AOD is that it was built to be a luxury car trans and yes the AOD shuffle is hard on it in stock form. When it shifts into 2nd 1st gear is actually still releasing pressure on the clutch pack. This allows for a seamless smooth shift. Not exactly what we are looking for in a performance trans. The TV cable should not have any slack in it. It should move as soon as the throttle does. The TV cable tells the valve body how far the throttle is open, the valve body then adjusts the shift firmness and rpm point of shift. If it's been driven far with the clip broken on the cable or way out of adjustment it will hurt it. I've broken 2 so far, 1 on the dyno even. The latest one with the manual valve body, trans brake, kevlar clutches and forged internals has gone 3 yrs without an issue.

Likely...happened to my AODE but usually the other gears wont be far behind!

tranny not shifting properly!

3) Should there be tension on the tv cable itself?

Cable should be taught , do a visual inspection and make sure none of the clips are broken and it is properly hooked to the bottom of the throttle body and it is not loose .

If the tranny is fried it is not too bad of a job , I replaced a few in my garage on jackstands . You can save money by dropping it yourself and taking it for a rebuild or buying a remanufacture . I would recommend atleast a shift kit possibly even a mild stall and definately a tranny cooler . Or you can just swap over to a T-5 and row some gears!!
