GM is king of shared platforms.... you should really read up. All brands do this fyi.

List of GM platforms - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Cobalt/G5/ion, aura/G6/malibu , equinox/torrent/vue, your beloved f-bodies firebird/camaro... the list goes on friend.

oh i know that. same thing with cougar/thunderbird/mark viii, cougar/mustang, fusion/milan taurus/sable. etc.

grand marquis/crown victoria/town car.

Actually it goes deeper than that:

CD3:
Mazda6, Fusion, Edge, Milan, MKZ, MKX, Mazda CX-9,

D3:
500, Montego, Taurus, Sable (now discontinued), MKS, MKT, Flex, soon: Explorer, Volvo XC90

I have nothing against shared platforms, but they should at least make a really good base platform and use that across the board. The Volvo designed D3 is a VERY bloated chassis, 4000+ lb curb weight, extreme understeer, etc... but the Mazda designed CD3 is exceptionally good. The Ford/Volvo/Mazda joint designed C1 is used in compact cars like the Mazda3, Mazda CX-7, Ford Kuga, Ford Transit, Volvo C30/C70/S40, Mazda5, and the non-USA Ford Focus from 2004-up.

The USA Ford Focus is STILL made on the 1998 C170 chassis - total rubbish. The Europeans are getting a 300 hp Ford Focus RS and we have a 11 year old Focus with fake fender vents and LED lights for the cupholders.

The current focus chassis is alright, with a few tweaks it can have pretty heroic handling. Closest thing we've got to a real focus though is the volvo c30. I test drove one and it was awesome. Firm, light on its feet, and rock solid. The turbo 5 is very smooth too. It's a shame the north american market has leaned bigger is better for so long.

That camaro's interior... :rlaugh:

The Mazdaspeed3 is also a C1 car and it has a 263 hp turbocharged I4. IMHO the MS3 is much better than the C30.

I would love to try out the new 300hp Focus RS though.

I thought the speed3 shared the same underpinnings as the current 3? Too bad mazda around here wants too much for them. I'd much rather have that than the caliber srt4.

The local dealers wanted $23k + tax/title for the 2008 MS3 just a few weeks ago (in 2009).

The Mazda3 is a C1 car, just like the 2004-up International Focus / Volvo C30, etc... The Mazdaspeed3 is a Mazda3 wagon with some mods and extra reinforcements in the roof/chassis (hence no moonroof option).

Overall, the MS3 is a very swell car. The interior is almost on-par with Audi, but there were some thngs that made me look at the Cobalt SS instead.

That interior ...

Is one of the reasons I so desperately wanted to be able to sit in one at the car show !

Meaning that I am hoping it's better looking in real life than in pictures ...

But, since the SS & V6 on display were "sealed" - you could not sit in them - I still don't know.

On the other hand, the new Challenger is just flat out bad azz ! :nice:

The only drawback is the large rear pillars ( blind spot ) and the fact that no 'vert will be offered ... :(

Who knows - the SS is long paid for, and for way less than the cost of a new one I could add on some HP's to what I got.

Of course, my Ford & GM stock could make me megabucks, too. :p

Time will tell.
