Well I have been thinking for a while about what to do with my old car now that all it needs is paint, I want to sell it, so after that I want to buy a early 90's mustang for road racing. Would a fox body be good for road racing or a 94 to 98 gen be better. I found a 98 6cyl with a 5spd, for sale and I would swap out the motor for a 5.0 or 4.6? what motor will last longer with a good amount of abuse? I heard that the 5.0 have weak blocks? I do not know if that is true or not? How much does it cost for a track day? I have not sold the old car yet but this is a major possibility of what I would do as a hobby.

For road racing, I would go with a 94+ body style.

The Fox Body's have a really loose chassis (the 94+ is the same chassis, just with "improvements" to help stiffen it up). This can be fixed, and it's far from impossible to do.

However, 94+ cars also have better brakes and suspension from the factory, so that is another bonus.

As far as engines go, the weak block statement about 5.0's referes to high HP levels. Once they get to the 500 rwhp mark, that is known to be the "magic number" before they start splitting the block. Aside from that, those engines are bullet proof.

Mod motors are durable also, but if something breaks, it's generally more expensive. Personally, I'd trust beating on a 5.0 around a course, as opposed to a 2v 4.6, stock for stock.

1994-1995 GT's still had the 5.0, so that is a good buy if you can find one in good shape.

You could swap either motor into that 1996 you are talking about, but thats more time and money to put into that car. Plus the V6's suspension is sub-par to the GT's.

+1 on a 5.0 being cheaper to build. and i would definitely say if your trying to race road courses id go 94+ for suspension reasons as stated above.
Personally i would go with a 94-95 if because they already have the 5.0.

as far as the 96 v6 goes the suspension being inferior to the gt's is really a non issue if your going to race on road courses because you will want to upgrade the suspension anyways.

Thanks guys for this info I am really getting into this kind of racing, I found a 94 5.0 in my area and I am thinking of looking at it this weekend. I like the mod motor a lot, I had a 2v and it was a beast but it is still up in the air on what motor I will get, Thanks again guys

Another 94-95 advocate, its got the right motor AND suspension. I too love tearing it up on road courses, only got to do it once although it was for 6 days straight, it was soooooooooooo much fun. It really pushes the limits of you and your car.

I have an '03 GT already setup for Road Racing/Auto-Xing that's for sale. It has a Maximum Motorsports Max Grip Box, Wilwood 6 piston brakes/Eaton Posi/FRPP 4.10 gears/Moser 31 spline Axles/MGW Short shifter/etc.

If you're interested you can email me at [email protected]

I'm in L.A. so it would be easy for you to see the car before you buy it.

Thanks guys I love road courses, I like them more then just drag racing because it is a real test for a driver and car and I think its more fun then just drag racing for 13 seconds and then your done but thats just me, The Bird almost has paint, but today I drove it to work and the gas tank which is the original from the factory started to leak like a water fall so I have to replace the tank, then brakes then comes the paint, it is so close, I want it done, then I will post it for sale, we'll see what happens, hopefully I get it done soon. Thanks novanutcase, I will have to wait and see what happens in the next couple of months with my current project, I will have to sell the classic car in order for me to buy a track mustang.

ive been compiling a parts list in excel for a future build for my 99 GT. the parts list is far from being complete and is already over 8k (not even including NY State internet taxes or shipping). this doesnt even include the supercharger i will eventually want to get.

because of this list and the amount of money needed to invest, i have now been thinking about upgrading to an 03/04 cobra rather then decking out the GT

stay 5.0 if you can, itll be a lot cheaper

Thanks a lot guys for all this info. I know a guy who buys insurance auction cars and sometimes if I am lucky there is a mach1 or 98 and older cobra being auctioned off and some are not that bad, but I was thinking if I got a 6 cyl and bought a auction mustang gt or what ever other highpo mustang and swap it out. These cars go for less than a thousand if I am lucky and no one bids on it. I found a 95 5.0 with 90k in miles and the starting bid was 50 bucks and I was almost buying the car but the right front was hit so bad that the front clip looked tweaked. so I don't know yet on what I am going to do but I am going to most likely get a 5.0 because all of you guys are saying that they are a little but cheaper to build which is what I am looking for. I am still searching and I am still working on the car I must sell in order to buy a track mustang. or If I buy a mustang 5.0 cheap enough maybe I will not have to sell the old classic, because the mustang I would build would not be street registered ( track only car) so I can save money and I will not insure the car being that it is for the track unless there is some sort of race car insurance not sure if that even exists?

My '03 has 29,000 miles. If you really wanted to make it go fast all you would need is a KB, Whipple or Procharger. Everything else is there.

$14,999.00

You couldn't buy a 5.0 and build it like this for that much!

Wow your musatng has the same miles as my Mach1 but I will have to wait and see how my bird works out then I can give you a PM. I am making payments right now for my Mach1 for the next four years so I will definately have to sell my bird to buy a car over 10k.
