Heh heh - - I also have never seen a 400 with a 4-V carb, either! I think I have that book laying around at home somewhere . . . I'll see if I can dig it up and the reference to it you mentioned.

I know there isn't anything listed in the Encyclopedia of American Cars regarding a 400 with a 4-V carb for any of the years up through 1975 . . . if there is such an animal (either a 400M that came with a smallblock bolt pattern, or one that came with a 4-V carb), I'd sure like to see it!

:D

I saw one back in the 70's sittting on the floor of a Junkyard engine room. Didn't know it was rare at the time.

Block 400 FMX - Clevelands Forever!

There's a photo of a 400 FMX block with the small block bellhousing bolt pattern.

I also wouldn't put a 400 in a Mustang, but if you were building a 400 right now, I'd bet you could get some reasonably priced performance internals from some of the people who won and placed high in this year's Engine Masters competition.

Edit: regarding the 4 barrel carb for a 400, on the same wiki site linked above they have photos of a 4 barrel factory intake for a 400.

FWIW:

Im trying to find some info. I have a c4 that was told came out of a ltd or something. Called ford and a local tranny shop they said numbers match for a 64-72 c4 it has a "big block" bell housing. I dont need it. Dont plan on using it. Would like to sell it. Whats it worth. I know they are rare. But how rare and what they worth?

Maybe you could make a trade for a small block. Too big for an early Mustang. But putting a small block in place of a six is not without its challenges. Frame mounts, motor mounts, throttle linkage, rear end, driveshaft, trans, possible trans mount too. I did a Falcon years ago. Yes the parts are available but it did cost some dough.
