Transmission Removal Problem

Hey guys, new here, but I just picked up an 86 GT and am having a problem removing the transmission. Its got a T5 in it, and the guy who had it before me said he put in a new clutch, went to start it, and it was locked up. The starter wont turn the flywheel or anything. So, I decided to pull the transmission and check everything out he did. Well, problem I am having is that I can only get the trans about 2 inches out. I have tugged and pulled on it every which way and it just wont come out.

I tried to pull it with the bellhousing still on it at first and could barely get it pass the dowel pin, so I took the trans to bell bolts out and got it out enough to where I can see the shaft on the bearing retainer outside the bell and thats it. It seems like its stuck or binded up with something. Any thoughts on what I could do? I tried getting up under it with a come along attached to the trans while I wiggled it, but it was all for nothing. Im thinking about cracking the bellhousing, undoing the clutch, and pulling it like that. I have an extra bell, and a t5z at the house. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

The early T5's had an aluminum input shaft housing that the throwout bearing rides on. If the throwout bearing wears a groove in the input shaft housing, the trans will be very difficult to remove. The throwout bearing gets stuck in the grooves and won't let the trans slide out.

I've never even tried to get one out with the bell still on..just seems like extra work for nothing. I'd say jrichker is on the right track with the throwout bearing....or maybe something silly like the shifter catching on the floor pan even (done that one myself). Sometimes it helps if you put a block of wood on a jack and position the wood under the front lip of the oil pan (where the pan bolts on, NOT on the sump of the pan) and jack the engine up a little bit in the front which will push the trans down some and give you extra clearance. I've had to do this on my Merkur because the bell housing bolts are on the inside of the bell and you can't remove the bell from the trans until both are out of the car (soooo stupid).

Me and him got the trans out like twenty minutes ago by doing what I posted above. We dropped the whole trans with the clutch disk, pressure plate, and bell still on it. The problem we have now is the clutch disk is stuck on the splines and we cant get it off. It will not budge at all. Any suggestions on getting the clutch disk off the trans?

You might be able to undo the front retainer bolts. The bolt's are 1/2 in, take a long extension run all of them off and then it will give you more room to work with. Once you get all the bolts out spin the input shaft until you can pull it out of the case. It will only come out one way. I agree with Mustang5L5, sounds like the shaft twisted.
