Not sure from the pic, but I think you are talking about the rear bumper guard. Try National Parts Depot, Virginia Classic Mustang,etc... 73 parts are harder to come by but you might get lucky.

Bumper Guard Molding

Negative. Bumper Guards are just that - Vertical chrome things that IMHO look like crud and theoretically protect the bumper.

If anyone has a 73 shop manual, it will be in there. I only have the 72 which doesn't use this piece. 72 has a rubber piece on the lower front fender behind the bumper (which 73 does not have) which is called a "splash shield". So maybe they call it a "rear splash shield".

I'm pretty sure you're SOL as far as repro's go since this part is only used in 73.

Thanks for the info. Now I have another question. Do you suppose that its possible to use 71 or 72 parts so that I dont need the part I'm having trouble with? If so what peices would I need to do the swap?

I believe the only thing you have to do is replace your 73 bumper mounting brackets with 71-72 brackets.

Save or sell the 73 brackets as they are not available as repro's.

Naturally, you'll have to weld the holes closed that the rubber pieces mounted to.

You'll probably have to remove the long filler plate (not sure exactly what it's called) that sticks straight back from left to right.

Your part number is correct for 73 "Bumper Guard Moldings" which are the rubber parts on the exterior of the bumper guard which looks like this:

Oooops Yes I made a mistake,

That part number I posted came up me reading it wrong in the book .

I should have been more careful

This is the part that bolts to the upper Quarter panel extension.

Paint to match with elastomeric paint

Mustangs Unlimited is picturing the wrong rear bumper guards since the ones in your diagram are much shorter.

Mil1ion, do you have all the Mustang manuals?

What resource do you get the D3ZZ- 17837-A (RH) and D3ZZ- 17838-A ( LH) part numbers from?

The 73-79 Ford Car Parts & Illustrations books

This is what Ford dealership parts counter people view in Microfiche.

*Note: there can always be supercede numbers for old parts

The part he is looking for is 1973 specific. In 1973 to meet federal crash standards the rear bumper was positions father away from the car and those plastic or rubber corner fillers were meant to take a 2.5 MPH hit without damage to the car. The part numbers provided are correct however, good luck finding them new, used they should be easy to find as every 1973 produced had them.
