did a reverse to standard water pump swap, now having cooling issues?

ok i know you have to change to a standard rotation water pump, i got that covered. i got this from summit.

GMB North America 125-1560P - GMB High Performance Water Pumps

so heres the deal. i changed my timing cover gasket, used the original 1990 timing chain cover, swapped to manual steering, and changed my water pump to standard rotation. (standard rotation is when the water pump pulley rotates in the same direction as the crank.)

here is how my pulley setup looks

Anyways, after completing the install, the car sits and idles with the temp needle at 90 degrees. i have been trying to burp the damn thing all day but nothing, it just pushes coolant out the fill cap until it gets to a certain point, and when i add any more it just burps it out. with the cap on it just build pressure and overheats. before, my temp needle never came anywhere close to the halfway point. im kinda confused, thinking i may have missed something when i did the water pump. do all the hoses go in stock locations etc when you switch from reverse to standard rotation? the t-stat is brand new and worked before i did the swap, but i havent tried changing it yet. any ideas?

yeah thats what i think im just trying to think of anything else it might be before i drain the coolant and try the t-stat, its kinda hard to believe its brand new. but thats how they are
 
I would say, this is a counterclockwise turning pump. Summit say "standard rotating".
And standard rotating for that year of mustangs is "counterclockwise"
Is that possible :shrug:

very possible, in fact thats exactly what happened. stupid summit catalogue missprint cost me a couple days of driving...
 
i know you probably dont want to? but worst case...pull the pump see what way the impellers turn and thats the rotation. other then that could be the t stat? what year is the motor? peace

What year car is the new waterpump for? Ford uses different timing covers with different style coolant passages that meet the waterpump. I had a hell of a time finding the right combination of timing cover and waterpump (clockwise rotation).
 
Ok, let's try this again. Apparently people don't really read before posting and just suggest random ****. So I'm going to explain the whole thing so people can learn what to do in a similar situation.

Summit sent him the WRONG PUMP, twice. T-stat is fine, it was removed and the car still overheated. The belt does not slip.

The stock 5.0 water pump is technically "reverse" rotation. He ordered a pump from summit that said a "standard" rotation pump for a 5.0, which should be the opposite of reverse, which is what he needs for routing the belt this way. Why they don't just specify clockwise or counterclockwise I don't know. But apparently their idea of standard rotation is that it's reverse rotation just like the stock pump, so that pump was wrong. He then ordered an edelbrock pump that specifically said counterclockwise and the tech guys swore to him it would work and it was entirely the wrong pump all together. So a trip to trusty old Auto Zone got a standard rotation pump for an '85 crown vic. Everything's mint.

I dont know how summit can be blamed for ordering the wrong pump,Ford never made a fox with a standard rotation pump and the pump was ordered for a fox with a 5 liter.

Believe it or not, there's a couple companies other than Ford that make water pumps for 5 liters :eek: It was confirmed over the phone that it was a standard rotation pump, not reverse, for a 5 liter. The second time they swore it was the right pump and it wasn't even close to fitting nevermind spinning the right way.
