Hey guys,

I going and see this 90 gt vert that I wanna buy. Is there any way that I can tell if the car was an auto before. I know if the swap is done right it should`t be a problem but that`s just the way I am ...I want it to be a factory 5 speed.

Thanks!!:D

Thanks,

Im not sure but I think the gas pedals on the auto`s are wider than the 5 speeds right? I can check for that unless the swap included all three new pedals

If they did the swap like me then the only tell tell sign would be the trans tunnel, the T5 tunnel is taller and has a flat surface. The auto tunnel is lower and curved, so I had to contour the lower shift boot to the tunnel so it would fit.

The autos had the skinny flat pedal. I swapped mine, it's a five minute job, unlike the brake and clutch pedals.

It's rumored that the T5 swapped cars run harder because the AOD computer is more aggressive; if they did the swap right it should be fine.

the biggest give away should be if you gotta push in the button or not to get the key out of the ingnition. peace

What would that have to do with the trans? I've been in autos and sticks that have the key button.

How about the lack of a neutral safety switch? Most people are too lazy to go that far with the swap.

The manual cars have a key release button on the bottom of the steering column that you have to push to get the key out. On an auto car, there is just a big hole there.

I've gotta disagree here....my buddy's 89 GT had the button and he got into the column and bypassed it because he hated it. He has a T56 now but it was a factory AOD car. In fact i don't recall any Mustang i've ever driven that didn't have the button

I've been on my buddy's case trying to get him to bypass my button...he said it's real simple. If the auto cars had no button, i think people would be swapping their columns just to get rid of the stupid idiot button.

I remember reading something that said they did away with the button in 1991.

EDIT: I remember now.

Mustanggt.org 1991 The only major interior change involved the introduction of a shifter lock-out on automatic models, requiring a foot on the brake to shift into gear from Park. This feature eliminated the under-column key release button on previous year’s automatics.

I hate that damn button!!!!!!! Its about the most annoying thing in the world, and on the bottom of the collum no less!!!!

Anyways, check the door code as stated above and pull the shift boot, look for a modified tunnel.
