Ill soon be installing a vortech v2 w/ charge cooler on my stock 01 gt(auto) how is it that you guys go about racing it?
First of all how do you launch an auto, without fking it up(neutral drops)?
and second what techniques do you use when youve already launched?

I have an idea but maybe you guys have something that works even better.

Please no flames =)

Your best bet would to leave the car in D (Drive) with overdrive turned off of course when you are running down the track and when you launch. DO a little burnout and go to the line. When the light turns green let her have it! :nice: No n-drops:rolleyes:

Here's what I do.

1. Do a burnout; small, but enough to clean any dirt or water off the tires. This is assuming you have street tires.
2. Ease up and pre-stage.
3. Hold the brake almost as tight as you can; build up the RPM to....say...2000. This will be more or less depending on lots of things: stall or not, torque the car has, tire size, etc. Basically almost as much as you can before it starts spinning.
4. Stage by just easing off the brake. Then hold it back tight as you can again once you stage.
5. When the 3rd yellow flashes, let off the brake and hammer down. But don't anticipate the 3rd yellow.
6. As Jerry Reed best said it, "Hold on your @$$, Fred."

Now this probably isn't gonna work as good on a blown car like yours, but you'll just have to keep working at it until you get it right. Main thing is to just practice. And don't neutral drop it. Your tranny will go boom very quickly.

that depends..do you want to control which RPM to launch at? if not then follow advice given in the first 2 replies, getting a shift kit or doing the jmod won't tell you how to launch but it will help with firmer shifts and longevity.

a valve body with a transbrake will let you launch at whatever RPM you want.

You choose what rpm to launch at by brake stalling, very few people opt for a trans brake. I'm not sure what he means by transbrake and valvebody, as a transbrake is a solonoid operated valve within the valvbody that locks the trans against itself so the converter can stall - but neither are needed for a good launch on a street car. Torque converter will affect that most from you're perspective. The main benifit of a t-brake is allowing the TC to meet its max stall before applying it to the driveline, if you have a stock TC this wont be significant - it'll just make launching a lil easier, which practice will do as well. suspension and tire will be much more fruitful at this point.

i did the j mod and installed a 3600 stall with 410's. and also puttinga v2 as soon as i find a fuel pump. j mod is where you drill 5 or 6 holes bigger in the stock seperator plate of the valve body. it allows more flow of fluid and higher pressures to quickly shift 1-2 and 2-3.

i have an auto with a Vortech. the J mod is a must in my opinion. my car would not shift fast enough from 1-2 without it. it would bang against redline. i've found that i can pull a 1.9x on 245 street tires with and without stalling the converter. try both techniques at the track and see which works best for you.

Auto here. No neutral drops = bad for transmission. Brake launching can wear out breaks! Use a good stall torque converter/shiftkit - make sure you have a HD tranny cooler and leave it in O/D off for good top mph and time :nice:
