Hey guys, I'm in need of a offroad h-pipe for my '88 Mustang Lx. I would like a Magnaflow or Bassani but i see they don't offer them. I see that Summit Racing sells JBA and Flowtech in those pipes but i think i would take BBK before them. I have heard of problems with BBK mid pipes not lining up to the headers properly though. My car currently has BBK shorties on it. In conclusion. Which company makes the best off road h pipe? Quality/materials. Thanks for any help!!!

All of the companies focus more on X pipes nowadays, since they are more popular, but IMO H pipes sound MUCH better on stangs.... That being said, I have had great luck with Mac o/r H pipes. They are a 3 peice design, making them easier 2 install, & for the price ($160-ish), the quality is pretty darn good.

I noticed that as well. Seems like companies are only making x-pipes ha. I personally like h better. The tone is deeper. The car idles louder and the car is louder in the lower rpm. But anyway.

Is this the midpipe you speak of? Looks to me like a 1-piece?

I agree with you about the sound....

That is the part, but the picture is wrong. This is what the Mac h pipes look like that I have had....

Mac Performance - performance accessories for cars, trucks, and motorcycles

I'm not sure who manufactures that off road pipe, for Brothers Performance, as it is identical to the Mustangs Unlimited branded part I bought several years ago. It is stainless as well, and it cost around $120 plus shipping. I would highly recommend that part. It fit like a glove, was easy to install, and it is still in just as good a shape as when i installed it about 5 years ago!

Thanks for the help guys. I really do like the 2 piece design because then i can hook it up all up loose and then snug it up. I think i'll go with the Mac piece. I kinda buy name brand parts because of customer support and quality. I'm sure there is nothing wrong with the BP's part though. Thanks again though!

Epik - Do you know if Mac offers that h pipe in stainless steel? I have a Stainless steel cat-back and ceramic headers. So i figured if i could i'd go stainless, i would! Thanks for your help!

I love the Jegs X-pipes, but their H-pipes are very similar in design and well worth the money. If you're looking for an off-road H-pipe, I'd go with one of theirs. :nice:

i have a jegs x pipe. the best $200 ive spent on any exhasut peiece. 3 pieice desine make it really simple to install and get things to line up....when i had tail pipes.... :( i want them back but i need the 3" flowmaster tail pipes that wrap under the gas tank as i got no clearence with 285's in the back now. and there $300 to forgetttttt that for now.

Off Road H Pipes only sound good with certian mufflers. 9 times out of 10 a given muffler sounds better with an X than an H.

That being said, I must be getting old because I dont want another midpipe without cats for a car that I drive often. The smell didnt bother me when i was a 17 year old punk in a noisy 5.0, but now i cant stand it. I had a catted BBK H on my 03 GT with 3 chamber flowmasters and what a sweet sound that car made. not obnoxiously loud, just very nice. people still commented that it was loud for a car with cats.

Or because H's are garbage for power. :nonono:

So a 1-3hp difference makes or brakes a cars fun factor, track times, & dyno numbers?

I prefer H pipes because they make a deeper, more muscular tone, & I seriously doubt any SOTP difference would be noticed between the two.

I beg to differ... granted, this is a modular car, but I think my 03 Mach 1 sounds great with its out of the ordinary exhaust combo. It has Mac LT's, o/r H, & bassani catback....

Here's a vid....
