Failed emissions... + bad day seeking input + Warning to JLTII owners.

A lot of the dealers turn off the rear O2 sensors because most standard aftermarket/non-certified tunes are like that. The SCT tune for my 2000 Crown Vic shut off the entire DTC/MIL system so it was not reporting codes for over 3 years.

I feel your pain on the JLT CAI. A few weeks after I received mine, I went to the track. Ran a few times, then popped the hood...just happened to grab the CAI, and found I could actually twist the MAF housing inside the tube. When it cooled down, it stopped. So naturally, I thought the problem was the glue (or whatever that stuff is) was becoming overheated, and just allowing it to spin...then it would just seal it back up when the engine got cool.

I called Bamachips, always nice guys, and they had JLT send me a new tube. While uninstalling the old tube, I found my problem. The tube had actually cracked on the bottom where the tube meets the MAF housing...so when it got heated, I guess it expanded the whole damn tube, which allowed it to move freely. I haven't had any problems with my new one yet (knock on wood).

Well I called the big 3 today (no not those) and here's the results:

Bamachips = No emissions tunes. They just told me to revert to stock, drive, pass and switch over to the JLT. I understand that that may be part of their tuning but I think it would benefit them to offer at least one tune level that can work with the emissions equipment.

Brenspeed = They can write an emissions tune. They were very nice and suggested I'd call Doug first and try to get it from him before seeking help from them or elsewhere.

VMP Tuning = Also said they could work an emissions tune and were a bit cheaper with a single file.

That's my findings so far. Today I reverted the car back to stock. I guess that buys me some time until my new JLT II comes in the mail. I'll probably get an emissions tune later on down the line.

Tillman also offers an emissions tunes for pump gas. They use SCT tuners. $50 for an email tune. I run their 91 performance in my 08 GT. I am impressed with it. Its better than the 91 tune from FRPP which was better than the stock one. My FRPP cai has a CARB number and the FRPP 91 tune will be my inspection tune when the time comes.

Speaking of custom tunes, whats the deal with lowering the fan temps to the point that they run all the time? Since my tune and tuner allowed me to change the fan temps, I set them back to where I was told stock was. Tillman had them set for 192 low and 198 high. But stock is, I think, 206 and 228. Any one know that the advantage is to having the fans come on just after the thermostat opens?

I don't know why they do that with the sct unless it's just the default setting to the unit. I always look to see the option parameters before I load my tune. The idle speeds are the same way, however, too high. One of the tuners should make a sticky here listing all the sct program options and what the factory settings should be so we don't have to guess what the fan speed hi/low, idle speed neutral/drive, rpm limits neutral/drive are. Heck, SCT could at least include it in the instructions with the tuner when you buy it if they're going to use default settings.

I had the same exact issue with my brenspeed tune... he had shut off the cats.

I called them up and he emailed me an emissions friendly tune to replace one of the 3 he had previously loaded up on my SCT (87, 89, 91 octane). He had it to me in a day or two, and was very helpful, even though he was rather busy.

I think I replaced the 89 tune with the emissions one so I can now use it each year as needed. Just make sure you complete that drive cycle so you don't have to worry about failing and paying for inspection twice.
