LEFT COAST
I recently picked up some nice used recaros for my fox & I was thinking about getting them recovered to match my porno red interior... I know, I know, everyone hates porno red, but I actually like it & I am trying to do something out of the ordinary....

I am thinking about doing a black with red inserts, similar to 10th anniversary Cobra seats, & I would also do the same in the rear. Not sure if i want to go with cloth, or leather, but I am considering doing black leather with red micro suede inserts, & picking up a new black carpet from 50Resto as well to break up the red more..

My other option would be to swap out all the red interior for grey, & keep the Recaro seats as is, because they are in great shape, & I like the material... Of course with this option, I will have to find super clean grey interior parts, because my red is in near mint shape, & I will most likely have to do a rear seat delete, because I will never find material that will match the Recaro material on the front seats...

Im sure swapping to all grey will actually be cheaper than recovering the seats, because leather & custom interior usually isn't cheap....

What do you guys think???

Dustin, I think it would look amazing if you had those recovered in black leather with red suede inserts like the black/grey cobra seats I have in my car. It would be costly, but i think it would really be worth it and totally different! I would keep the porno red at all costs, it's the cleanest example of it I've ever seen. Black and grey is so... black and grey haha. :nice:

Thanks Chris... Keeping the red is what I really want to do, I just don't know how much it will cost me & I will have to find a good shop to do the work... Im sure it will be over $1k, thats for sure....

BTW, you know how much I scored these seats for???

i think if you recovered the outside parts of the seat in red and the centers in black it would look bitchen

IMO your red interior is way too nice to take out and change to gray. I would just have the Recaros re-upholstered. However, since the interior of your car is predominately Red with Black accents I think it would look better if the seats were re-upholstered in Red Vinyl/Leather with a black suede insert. Just my .02 .

Thanks guys... The interior is in great shape, that is the main reason I want to keep the red, plus I wanted to be different. Even though Porno Red is very common, most hate it & swap it out, or its usually beat to $h!t...But it IS rare to see it in great shape...

I kinda like your guys idea, but I plan on doing a black carpet as well to break up the red, that is why I figured I should do a black outer edge with red inserts... But your ideas sound good too.... Keep 'em comin...:nice:

how much???

$65 at a local Pick N Pull....:D

wow, that kind of deal justifies spending the money on the reupholstery :D

LOL... The one problem is, the car is far from a show car, so spending $1k+ on interior seems stupid, but I really want to install these seats already. If I do interior, then Im gonna want to do paint, but that's another story:D... Im gonna look into the cost & then make my decision I guess...

I wonder how it would look with black heater vents also. I saw a car on here that had the grey interior and swapped the vents out for black and I thought it looked really good. Could be something else you could do the have the red/black look going for ya

like I said in the other thread I would just reup them. being that they are old (i know in good condition) the material will get matted faster. I doubt the recover would cost 1k but I could be wrong. I had a set covered (cloth) for around 200 with a lot of custom work a few years back in cali. worth checking on IMO. Plus I dont like the 70's look of the seats regardless.

a recover wouldnt cost more than 200 bucks

man, i don't know where you guys are going for custom upholstery work, but that is a ridiculous price and, honestly, a completely unrealistic one in New York... i would have thought California would be the same or worse for pricing...

for example: before i figured out how to do it myself, I asked a custom upholstery shop if they could swap my cobra headrests, it required NO WORK, just take the old ones off and put the new ones on, and they wanted $175 a seat!! needless to say i did it myself that night for free

when i had my boat done it was only 1k to remake the entire front bow area in water resistant vinyl, and custom lavey craft embroidered logos when i asked about recovering my race seats he said something like 165 for the pair

IDK, I think you will have less than 1k in it and I don't think its bad at all to have that much in it. That is the only area of the car you see while driving anyway. Maybe it's just me but I like seeing nice seats and a nice steering wheel when I hop in my car, no matter what it costs.

Thanks for the opinions & replys fellas. I am leaning towards recovering them, Im just gonna shop around to see what type of cost I am looking for with different types of materials. I know I want the outer edges & bolsters to be black leather, & the inserts in either red cloth, tweed, or suede.... Or vice versa...

yeah man, did u say those came out of a 91 vw? I have to wonder what the condition of the underlying foam is? Here it would cost me more to recover a set of seats, that to just go out and buy some new ones, now id hate to ask what they would want if the seat foam had to be replace as well. I hope it works out for you, but i would of just dropped a few more on some sn95 seats or something. Ive seen some nice corbeaus for sale on corral. Ur notch is SICK! Honestly that red interior looks too clean to mess with man. It put somethng like this in that sucka and roll!

Corbeau CR1 Red Cloth Seat

From what I can see, all the foam still seems to be very firm besides the lower bolster where you can see the wrinkles. It has broke down a bit there, but other than that, it seems good to go. For some reason, VW seats last a long time. My DD is an 86 Jetta GLI, & the original seats are in near mint shape as well with the exception of one very small tear on the driver seat, but all the foam is still very firm too...

My DD seats...

Believe me, I have looked into all the red Corbeaus, Recaro's, ETC, but none of them are even close to the weird shade of "PORNO" red... Plus, they are around $1000 a set once you factor in brackets, & that would only include front seats. After that, my rears wouldnt match. If I recover these seats, I am going to also do the rears to match as well.... SN95 seats arent much better than Fox seats IMO, unless they are 99-04 Cobra, or 03/04 Mach 1 seats, but then those wouldnt match the red whatsoever either...

Thanks for the compliments on the notch...:flag:
