Would you want 315HP or 365HP?

I thought this would be a good topic for a Mustang forum. Would you rather have 315HP in your car or 365HP? Now what if the 315 came from a V8 and 365 from a V6 - the new Ecoboost V6.

I’m glad Ford is listening to it’s customers and not critic’s and will keep the V8 in the Mustang. As a V8 owner I would rather have that as my platform. Never mind modifying, building and tuning – the V8 is a part of a long, storied and continuous history of the car.

I think the new Taurus SHO is a very cool car and am happy Ford stepped up to the table and created what should be an excellent engine, the V6 EcoBoost with 365HP. I think the technology can spin off into other cars and trucks. A smaller version into a Focus like the European RS with 300HP. How about dropping that thing into a Ranger… umm a Ranger with 365HP… OK never mind. How about a SVT Fusion with this engine. It could start to compete with the M3 at half the price.

Good subject. I agree with you on the V8 platform just seems like there are more options with it. Also one can bring the 315 up to 365 with some bolt ons. How far do you think they will be able to "push" the HP up on the ecoboost 6 banger?

Good topic. I would have to drive them both, but I would lean toward the V8 for the sound quality.

They might be able to push the power on the ecoboost 6 as much as you can on the 4.6L V8. I have seen 4 bangers make 800hp, so any engine can make huge power, its just a question of how much boost your willing/able to run. The engine already has the turbo on it, so you can probably tweak the boost right out of the box. Instead of having to save 6 grand for a supercharger kit, as you would with the V8.

FI technology has come a long way, and it no longer has the lag problems etc, so a turbo engine makes a lot of sense. The only drawback, really, is the sound of the V6. I have heard some good sounds come out of a V6 (VW R32), but that is rare, and does not really compete with a V8 sound. Does that mean will stick with a V8 just for the noise? Maybe. Noise is very important.

Anyway, I am waiting for the coyote V8. Should be cool. Too bad there is not a Twin Tubro EcoBoost V8. It makes the power of a V10, with the fuel economy of a V8!

I agree this is an interesting question. V6 may be lighter, leading to better acceleration than you would get from just boosting the output of the V8 to 365 HP, plus you might get better handling. I do like having a V8, though.

I can tell you fuel economy, to me, isn’t a part of the argument. I didn’t buy a Mustang for it’s great mpg.

I would have to say, I would be pretty erked if there were a V6 EcoBoot Mustang and it blew by me… Wow, I really can’t decide, this is a troubling question….

I'd like a ford Explorer with the ecoboost motor, better fuel economy than the 4.6 and more power to move the heavy beast.
The mustang...tough debate. My perfect mustang would be a version with the 6.2L boss motor, or at the least the upcoming coyote motor, would I rather have the turbo 6 than a 4.6L? Not sure, my mother has a G35 infinity but it doesn't stir the soul-the sound is not there, I prefer driving my car. With turbos? Maybe...

I really depends on what you're use to driving. If the V8 is what you like, its what you're gonna chose. I personaly prefer the V6... way better take off haha Most of the younger guys round my age will pick the V8 tho cause of the sound but they forget, the V6 will give a boost.

I'd get the turbo v6 in a heartbeat. Here in California it's hard to have power adders, from the factory. I'd do a little tinkering and all, and push that baby to its limits, and back the program down for smog and other times I didn't need it where it was. The Eclipse/Talon/Stealths were fun in the early 90s with that they were cheap cars that could go rather quickly rather cheaply, and I'd love for Ford to make another factory bang-for-buck freak like they did with the 03-04 Cobras... everybody else is making them, why can't we?

Sure I love the classic V8 rumble, but if I can put down 500 with some simple mods, I'd rather sound like a wimp and give an assuming somebody a huge beatdown.

ok my thoughts on the v8 vs v6 eco w/twin turbos. I think better gas milage is great but at what cost and the cost of repairs to the turbo system upon failures. some may understand the mechanics and some may not. Im a cheapskate so give me the ecoboost without the turbos.
Some may have noticed the new SHO is coming at a premium cost starting at 35k I believe. wow thats a lot of doe for a base sedan.
:)

Mileage needs to be a consideration because muscle cars may disappear if manufacturers don't consider fuel usage.
Muscle cars almost died in the 1980s. I remember that well. The V8s also almost disappeared.
Fuel economy has to be taken into consideration. I love the sound of a V8 but would also love a V6 with lots of power and great fuel economy. What's going to happen if gasoline once again hits $4 a gallon or $5 or higher?
What's going to happen someday when there is no gasoline? That someday will be a reality. Will there be a hybrid or electric Mustang? Or will the Mustang just disappear?
Interesting questions. Only time will provide the answers.

new camaros have similar horsepower the 6 banger model to our v8 model. think its like 3 horsepower difference. they are over a second slower. so its not all about horsepower. small motors don't make the torque bigger motors make. even though we have a tiny v8.

i'd rather have the v8

ecoboost the v8

There is no replacement for displacement.
And
Horse power sells cars but torque wins races.

No no no....

You eco-boost the v8 up to 540 HP or more. If we are going to talk up the value of turbocharging a V6 to respectable power, then we need to do the same for the V8. Its only fair.

I rather have the new 5.0 liter that is supposed to be coming out.

Ford is WAY WAY over due for it's new family of V-8's Sure a Ecoboost V6 might work ok in a mustang but ford needs these new V-8's for the much more important pickup truck market and because they need it for the pickups we will see versions of the new motors in the mustang
