Gas tank/filler neck grommet Question

im pretty sure the grommet on the filler neck of my gas tank is leaking, i can see the caked dirt at the lip of tank dampened with gas originating from the base of the filler neck :notnice: has anybody replaced this before? is it hard to do at home? do i need to drop the tank/drain the tank? any help is appreciated :D

I just replaced mine a couple of weekends ago. Not a hard job, but you will have to drop the tank. It shouldn't take more than a couple of hours depending on how mechanically inclined you are. It helps to have a friend to help manuever the tank around. Try this link, it is for a fuel pump install, but most of the steps are the same. Also, try to run the tank down as low as you can.

its not hard, i tore mine when i installed my new fuel pump, just drain it and drop it...i ran mine down to E and there was still 2 gallons in it when i dropped it.

Get a repair manual, Haynes etc...it will help you.

You do not have to drop the tank. I have done this many times without dropping the tank. Be careful not to break the little valve on the end of the filler neck while pulling it through the gromet. This valve is used to stop gas frmo coming out of thetank in the event of a roll over, and it also prevents theives from stealing your gas out of the tank.

yeah im gonna look into buying a repair manual, hopefully with pictures :D the little valve at the end of the filler neck has been bent since i bought the car  i knew that it shouldnt always be open, but this way i should replace the neck while im there anyways, i mean the neck cant be more than what? 20 bucks?
