Stock block turbo guys?

a friend had a stock block 347 from chp. had trick flow heads. it had a bread box type intake. the car was dyno tuned. they said he was pushing the max on a stock block it made 650 with 18 pounds of boost to the rear tires out of a c4 tranny. it ran a 9.98. they turned the boost down to 12 psi and it ran that time

A local tuner is GREAT with fabbing up turbo kits for stock block 5.0s. He wants me to set one up, and I'll run through his setup and try not to forget anything.
255lph fuel pump
42# injectors with Lightning MAF
Garrett T3 turbo
Custom intercooler
E303 cam
3.55 gears
I BELIEVE that's all he puts in it, mod wise. On bolt-on 5.0s he's gotten a consistent and reliable ~400rwhp out of this setup, running between 8-10 psi. He sets an EXTREMELY conservative tune, and says that the stock block/internals have always been fine with the kit. Hope this helps, and if you need to know anything about what this tuner does, shoot me a PM and I'll be happy to send you some information for him so you can talk with him personally.

As my car sits now

Tfs 1 cam
Gt40 heads ported, lowers the compression a bit right?
Gt40 intake lower ported

stock bottum end.only 102k miles and motor was perfect. So im thinking of going turbo with it.Backed by a aod with a 3200 stall and transgo shift kit.I want about 400ish rwhp. The 302 is in my Mark VII.Heres a pic of both my cars.

a t3 housing seems VERY small for a 5 liter..

Maybe it was a T4 or one of the T3/T4 hybrids? I don't know much about turbo sizes really. He only has it spool up to 8 psi on all the kits he does on cars. He says he does the E303 to bump the power band up a bit too, so it compliments the overall turbo kit.

More then likely a t4 it would be t3 if it was twin turbo.

on a stock bottom end you dont want any more than 8 psi. i saw a friend had something around 12-14 psi on a stock bottom end and blew a connecting rod through his block. other guys i have talked to at shows say no more than 8 psi on a stock bottom also.

508rwhp 559rwtq . . . at 15lbs (has been backed down to 10lbs)

stock shortblock
ported e7s by me (extensive work)
ported weiand xcelerator by me
converted 650 holley per hanger18 page

Holset H1E

I built the exhaust with some scrap 2.5" pipe, flipped around $60 hedman shorties, ebay wastegate, and two 3.5" u-bends from summit.

That's what the local tuner suggests to turbo 5.0 guys, buying a set of shorties and flipping them around. Seems much easier than getting a custom manifold, but how is the access to the plugs with flipped headers? Same as stock, or close to it?

the same on my hedmans.

the only thing preventing it from being as easy as anything else is the downpipe I built which goes over the passenger side plugs/wires.

No clearance issues but you have to take off the downpipe if you want to use a ratchet or take the extra minute of turning in the limited space.

I read somewhere that the pony down headers are just bbk that are flipped.

they very well might be but i dont have access to a weld nomore or v band clamps and flex joint.Im sure i could build it for a few bux less then what they want ($340).But the way i see it its a bolt on thing and really the only thing i would end made up for me.Downpipe i can get some muffler shop to weld it up for me.Or a local hotrodder i know.Intercooler pipeing id just use ebay like i did for my 1st gen mx6.

anyone got any pics of flipped headers? My buddy was gonna do it but i bought his car all he had was the headers on upside down.

I see what your saying. I have been reading up on turbo kits for over a year now. The best place to look in to all this in on the turboforums. You can read about the good and the bad about any kit that is made and even a bunch of diy kits. Millhouse on here has a good diy thread to.

Here is the like to the turboforums.

not the best exhaust view but you get an idea.

we had an old h-pipe that I cut up (freebie) to steal the ball/flange sockets from, a bunch of cut up pieces, and one 2.5" u-bend to make it all work from the headers to the turbo
