I recently contact Gary at SmoothLine.com about their current Hardtop for the 99-04 Mustang. If you look at it... well... the rear window is to small, the quarter windows cant be rolled up, and the roof line is not right.

I asked them if they would consider developing a hardtop for the 99-04 cars that addressed these issues:

1. Allow the quarter windows to be rolled up with the top on
2. Have a rear window glass that looks like the coupe (instead of a tiny window)
3. Design the roof line with the A and C pillars to look like the coupe and the overall roof line to look like the coupe.
4. Design fitment around the back edge of the car to not wear the paint or trim and look correct and not out of place.

I feel if they can do this many people will be interested.

I got a reply back that they are actually considering this (before my email of course) and would like to gauge the market to see who would like this type of thing. The price will probably be around 1400-1800.

So... who likes the sound of this, who would be interested (if it looks good and all that). I barley ever drive my car with the top up but in the winter it would be a nice solution if executed correctly. So reply back to let me know if you would like something like this and your concerns so they know what you want if they try to develop something.

I assume 94-98 would just require a different locking setup other than that it should be the same.

Hell no I am not going to spend that kind of money to have another top. Why would I need this?

The convertible top is insulated and has a head liner I have driven in temps well below zero you cannot even tell its a convertible.

I really do not see the point of this especially considering the price.

I could see there being a market for this. It's the best of both worlds; a convertible and a hardtop. The 1995 Cobra was available with an optional removable hardtop. Ask in 94-95 Talk and I bet you'll get some responses from the couple guys who have removable tops. I'm not entirely sure who one of them was, but I remember that Killercanary got lucky and picked one up, to install on his GT.

Its not about insulation or anything, its about looking better than the cloth top. Its just something you can use when its cold out and all that~ its not for everyone just something that I think there is a market for. I personally always use my top unless its below 60 degrees out, when it is... this would look better IMO than the cloth top with... makes the convertible look worse than the coupe (when the top is up)

Here is the 95 cobra hard top from ford, I am sure it could be improved upon and it looks pretty good

You know I think I just might be interested in that but I'd like to hear more feedback on the product. $1400 for a hardtop is a bit pricey for a "toy".

I'd like to hear more about weather resistance (leaks?) and longevity (high quality or crappy aftermarket?) before I committed to a "yes" on this.

No it isn't. Mustang owners are so cheap.

Have a look at S2000 hardtops and we'll talk after. $1400 is cheap for a hardtop if it's done right.

Sorry, but you have misunderstood my comment. The HardTop is not a "necessary" upgrade, it is purely for appearance. It does nothing to improve the performance of the car and is entirely redundant in fuction to the existing convertible top... it's a toy. A cool toy, but a toy none-the-less. It's not a matter of being "cheap" it is a matter of not pissing away money foolishly.

I thought Cervinis was supposed to be engineering one (as of a couple years ago) If i remember correctly the proto-type pics were pretty awsome. I like my convert (women love it more) but if i had it to do over, hard top all the way. so im gonna have to say no on this one guys. Were not driving jeeps here. lol

I see this as added security. Too easy for someone to just cut the cloth top to get in. GF has a convertible, I bought the coupe for when we must park in dodgy areas.
