a rod tapping the head??? are you planning on doing this rebuild yourself? for that kind of money you can buy an entire explorer engine, a new cam, better valve springs and a set of longtubes. explorer longblocks at my local salvage yard are $400, a good cam $100-$150, a good set of valve springs and retainers $75, set of longtubes $100, and by the time you buy gaskets and what not you will be about the same price. and pick up alot of power.

Let me amend:

The piston is tapping the head due to the rod. I'm quite confident in the diagnosis, although further inquiry will require a breakdown of the engine regardless. If the engine is being taken down to the short block, I am figuring that a rebuild will be in order.

BK, a core rebuild has been in my thoughts. I'm not really going for much more power gain though. This is my daily driver and I'm cool with having a more or less stock-running car. I'm actually considering buying a reman long block as well, but the price seems prohibitive.

Thats way too much money. A piston tapping the head? You mean tapping the valves? Or when the valve are closed the piston taps the head? I am kind of confused by this, if this was happening I would think something would be seriously destroyed to the point where it wouldnt run. Again how did you get come to this conclusion? If you are hearing a tapping are you sure it isnt a lifter or something? Like said before, go with the $700 short block from 50resto, you will have a block that is completely fresh, and you can reuse your top end, and maybe spend 100 bucks on gaskets at the most. Go to you local parts store and they should have a head gasket set for less then that, with everything you need for the heads and up. 900 is way to much for just that stuff. If you are going to tear the motor apart anyways, tear it apart and find out what your need FIRST before you start spending money.

700 bucks for a short block? How much does freight add on to that??

I had a buddy who ran an explorer setup.......but he still rebuilt it haha. I have heard from many people with good luck in using a jy setup. I, personally, would get one and tear it down/rebuild the bottom end. Swap the heads or use some gt40's....that way you can reuse your same exhaust, no? when time comes pluck the old one out and slap the new setup in
