I wish they would make a device that would block Cell Phone calls in or out while not in Park. In Texas about every 4th car the driver has a phone in his/her ear. I thing the device should be installed in all new cars and be mandatory when doing a safety inspection. It should only receive the phone number of the caller. If you feel like taking the call you must then pull over and put the car in park to dial out or talk. People that talk on a cell phone are putting the driving public at risk. Women do a much better job at talking and driving but they are no good also. I just don't do it. 1 in 20 accidents are linked to cell phone (CBS) and now an even more dangerous thing. I am with you. I am actually a member of the city council where I live. We tried to ban cell phone use while driving unless you have a hands-free device. Turns out the cell phone companies when they first went into business got the state to pass a law that took away local government's ability to regulate cell phone use.
It is a serious problem. But so are people who eat, put on make-up and about everything else you can imagine while driving.

This is one of my pet peeves too. California is one of the few states that has strict hands free laws and vigorously enforces them. I almost got hit in the butt twice in a row today by a woman that had her phone stuck to her head. Last week I was next to a young woman who, believe it or not, was actually TEXTING while driving in 45 mph congested town traffic. Men are every bit as bad at talking and attempting to drive as women.
Loss of a driver liscense for 3 months for not using hands free for a first offense sounds about right to me and go up from there. Somebody texting while driving should loose driving privilages for life for a first offense.

California doesn't enforce them as vigorously as they lead you to believe. Not in LA anyways. I travel to LA for work every week and I think I see more people on cell phones (not hands free) than I do in the DC area.
The problem is the distractions of the call, though. Not so much the cell phone itself. Most studies show you are just as likely to get into an accident talking to a passenger as you are talking on a hands free device. Using a cell phone to your ear is only marginally worse. People need to just focus on DRIVING - not other things.

When I lived in Boston I saw a guy doing a crossword puzzle driving in stop and go traffic. Seen other people reading books, women doing makeup is another nice one. CT has the cell phone law as well, it does not seem to work too well. The police seem to be on cell phones more than anyone.
I agree with ct07gt - the police do not enforce the cell law and are on cells themselves all the time but then they also often speeding insanely fast, passing on the right and weaving in and out of traffic carelessly because the laws dont apply to law enforcement in CT.
And what about those signs along the highway urging people to use their cell phones to report agressive drivers? Maybe those states dont have a ban on cell usage while driving?
While filppin the channels on tv one night I see celebs bragging about how many things they do while driving because they are so good at multitasking and yes even texting and reading books while driving. As long as you have idiots in the media promoting it and laughing at any criticism of it then it will not go away.
As for purposely causing an accident to get your point across; I believe that amounts to causing the outcome you are purportedly against and of course its illegal to purposely cause an accident that you can avoid. A better solution might be to call 911 on your cell and report the offender... : )

All states that have the ban have an exception for emergency calls. That would include reporting agressive driving. Not ALL state lawmakers are COMPLETE idiots.
