Question about gears

  • Sponsors (?)

You'll be right at 3000 rpm at 80...

Traction in first and second is pathetic..

Your future plans with the car should have a large effect on what gears you want to go with..

You need to make a plan, and think ahead when you start modding, or else you end up buying lots of things twice...

I went from 2.73's to 4.10's on my '95 with AODE. It really feels like this is what the car should have come with from the factory. I don't commute much on the freeway, but I recently traveled 800 miles on the freeway on vacation, at 75mph with the cruise control on the whole time, and got over 20mpg.
Car never feels like it is straining or getting hot.
No regrets with the 4.10's.

this really needs to be said more often. Often times guys come and ask whats the best beginner mods to do, and gears are usually in the top 3. But if they dont match your end goal for the car is it really worth it to buy them now? To me the gears should compliment the combo you have....so figure that out, then get the gears. Unless u are cool with possibly buying stuff twice over a given time period.

BTW, gears themselves arent that expensive. So if u can do it yourself then doing it twice aint bad. But if u are paying to have them put in....they are pretty damn expensive. :bang:

The way I see it is this:

N/A Combo: If you're planning no staying all motor with your car, and just looking to get a solid 300rwhp or so out of it as a DD, go 4.10's, but be sure to beef up your suspension along with it, otherwise you'll be losing your 'acceleration' through wheel spin.

Turbo/Supercharger: Go with something like a 3.55 in the long run for a turbo or supercharged car.

I somewhat disagree with this.. If you are building it up NA, with a decent HCI, I would run 3.73's.. You should have alot of midrange torque..

I Almost regret having 4.10's.. I wish I had bought 3.90's.. Oddball size, but I think they would be perfect..

I went with 4.10's because the car would bog between first and second, and the steeper the rear gear, the closer it brings the tranny gears together..

A Vortech or Procharger actually takes longer to build real boost than a turbo does, so centrifugal guys end up running fairly steep gears..

If you do ALOT of highway driving, I would most definately stick with 3.73's..
I hate driving at 3000 RPM for hours at a time.. If you hold it a 3000 RPM in neutral, it sounds like it is screaming.. Lucky for me, I might drive on the highway once or twice a year..

You do make a good point... But it also depends on what the car is used for, I suppose. As a daily driver/fun car to drive, I think I'd agree that 3.73's would be better suited. For a track car though, something steeper may be better... A local shop owner had a 10 second 306 on a stock T5 actually about a year ago. Built 306 with nitrous, and was running 6.3 in the 1/8th. I believe he had 4.56's in his car, but that was GREAT for the 1/8th. Highway cruising = terrible. And driving around town = terrible with how much shifting is involved.

In summary, I agree with you. :nice:

When you price your gears, you might want to get a price for the speed senors also.Ever since I put my gears in I have an abs light.
I tried to be as careful as I could but I must have damaged at least one of the sensors.
