Car won't start when turning key

Hah, my old thread! Yes, if you rejoin that wire you should be able to start the car. As I mentioned in that thread, that wire is a bypass for AODE cars. Manual tranny cars have that removed and rely on a switch on the clutch to engage the ignition. It is standard wire, not a fusible link.

Cool thanks. I will join those two wires tonight when I get home and hope for the best. I feel good to get rid of that clunky old alarm out of the car too. Progress feels good :D

Ok, so that didn't fix it like I was hoping for. Damn

I went ahead and checked the relay again and the only pin that was getting power was number 30. I did not check the MLPS due to my wife not getting home till later tonight and my voltmeter wires just aren't long enough.

Anything else I can try or look at?

I'm almost cetain that number 30 is your constant battery power. What you need is one of those to be hot when you turn the key. I think power would run from the ign. switch to the MLPS and then to that little jumper under the dash, then into the engine bay to the underhood fuse panel. It's a real simple system. You need to start at the ign. switch and work your way under the car to check the MLPS. If it's not sensing nuetral or park, it won't let the car be started. That's another thing, have you messed with the shifter to make it start? Like hold the key in "start" and move the shifter up and down? Make sure you're in a clear spot with nothing in front or behind you in case it starts in gear!

Ok. I tried to get my hands inbetween the exhaust and the body of the car to check the MLPS wires and that's not going to happen.
However, the car has been starting with the key every once in a while for some reason. Any thing else I can check?

Hey again,

Yes I did move the shifter like you said. It turns on more now with the key instead of the button, but I think you are right and the linkage needs to be looked at and adjusted. One of these days I have some free time I'll look under it and reinstall the MLPS sensor and look at the linkage. :nice:

Hey i have the same problem Sometimes it just won't start, turn the key everything works i can hear the fuel pump but nothing happens no click. the only thing is when the door is open with key in or out the chime is on. sometimes if i keep turning it on and off it will finally start.

Any luck with your starting issue? I picked up a very clean 93 GT the other day. Has a couple issues with it. One of them I've never heard of before and for me to say that is weird because Ive been around foxbodies for 13 years. When you turn the key to the start position it just keeps turning over and wont start, but as soon as you let go of the key(like when you do when it usually starts) it starts up, haha. Don't ask my why cause I have no clue. Have you ever heard of an issue like that? One of the first things that came to mind was the recall on the ignition switch. The car does have an aftermarket alarm installed which im sure splices into the starting wires somewhere on the column. Any ideas anyone?

I'm guessing your ignition switch is going bad. Sounds like it's not giving the coil power in "start" but the coil is getting power in "run". Since the engine is spinning from the starter when you pull the key back to the run position, it is enough to start when the coil finally comes online. I say throw another ignition switch in there and see where you're at. They are very cheap and can be swapped in about 30 minutes.

I know this is a very old thread, but my online searches about my (new to me) 93' GT "won't start electrical issues" led me here. However, I found this little hidden nugget from @xtreme02stang buried at the end of this thread. My car has been doing this exact same thing since I purchased it (2 weeks ago). Did you ever find out what the cause or solution was to this? Anyone else run across this same thing? I'm working out no-start bugs outa the car and hoping to nail down some issues.

Thanks in advance, I think I'll be making myself known around here, I've got more questions/issues to work through.

I've been thinking through this and I'm beginning to wonder if it could be a starter solenoid thing? I saw a diagram of how the solenoid works and it could be that the car fires up once the key begins to "come back from full turn" because of where/how the solenoid is making contact inside where the posts and wires are wound. Its not a huge problem for me, the car does start. But I'm concerned that it might get worse, or leave me stranded at some point. I guess that changing out the $18 solenoid would be a low-cost experiment to see if my hunch is correct...

Cheers,

Hook a test light between the small wire going to the middle of the starter solenoid and the negative terminal. If it lights in sync with you turning the key to start, the issue will likely be in the solenoid itself (as you are thinking above) or the power wire to the starter (assuming starter is good).
