okay, this shifter is POS. at first i liked it, but after driving my bmw for a few weeks then driving the mustang again, i can nail shifts perfectly in the bmw no problem, long ass throws too. mustang it seems like a chore because of how notchy the shifter is, and its hard as hell not to grind gears.

i dont have an option to try out other shifters unfortunately because everyone i know with one of these cars think the hurst is the best thing since sliced bread.

bmws shifter feels like it is going to fall off, but haven't missed a single shift. haha.

is the MGW a looser more friendly feeling shifter?

im thinking the MGW should be what i want, but its so hard to justify spending 300 bucks on a short throw that i've never seen in person.

it seems like with the hurst shifter to go from second you have to go from second, to neutral to 3rd, instead of just up and over towards 3rd in one move. i know it doesn't sound right saying it that way.

i can slam gears in so many different cars, from subarus to bmw to nissan to other mustang shifters. this car i can't do it full force how the shifter is set up.

first time driving my friends subaru i was powershifting right away not a single missshift, a cari've been driving for over a year that i own i can't get into gear as easy.

The Hurst definitely needs to be manhandled to work right. But you do that one too many times and the thing starts rattling like crazy. I love the retro look but damn the functionality is not up to par with MGW seems like.

With the MGW shifting to third is as simple as pushing forward. It does all the work for you. Compared to stock getting into 5th is a little tougher on mine, but I don't know if anyone else has this minor issue.

I must be old because I think the stock shifter is pretty darn good. I power shift my 08 everytime I go to the track. I have only missed second one time and never missed third. But, I am used to drag racing with Muncie's and A833 Hemi 4 speeds. Anything is an improvement over those. I was going to buy a Hurst because of the old school look but I hear complaints of rattling. I can bang the heck out of the gears with the stock shifter so I will spend the money on items that make the car perform better. I hear lots of good things about the MGW though.

i would rather the stock shifter over the hurst. when i purchased my car i had the hurst already in it from the package my car has. i would be fine with teh stock shifter, hurst is so notchy its a struggle to get it into gear and not neutral all the time. if i powershift with the hurst, 3rd tells me to screw myself and can't get into it at all. i'm a very angry shifter, i can push with 2 hands and it still wont go in sometimes.

I wonder if whoever put your shifter in ****ed it up some how? Mine is notchy but not nearly that bad. I have missed second twice but it was my fault, not the shifters.(Let the clutch out to soon)

Right! If you weren't the one who installed it, it's certainly possible it was installed wrong. The original instructions Hurst sent out were incorrect, and that could cause the binding you're seeing. Does your shifter point forwards or backwards?

i am not sure if its installed wrong, i'll take a look maybe tomorrow check everything out. its the one from the ford racing drag pack, not the normal hurst. so my arm is a little different and i had the factory shift knob still on it.

whatever the case may be, i'm just not digging the notchyness anymore i dont think. at first i enjoyed it, because it felt really precise, but then when i started driving other cars alot more, this shifter is just not my ideal set up.

i'll see if its installed right, if its not then i'll swap it around and test it out for a bit. but i want a smoother feeling shifter i think.

strange that everyone has such different experiences.

I have the Hurst Billett shifter which is quite a bit different from the regular Hurst. I think it was Hurst's responce to the MGW and the Tri-ax (it looks a lot like the tri-ax). I am also running RP synchromax. I think mine shift like butter. Here is a vid.

The most interesting part is probably the beginning, and the 4:20 mark. Neither are power shifts, but might give you some idea of how a properly working Hurst should feel like.

The RP synchromax made a big difference, so you may want to look into that if you have not already done so.

Also, I was thinking, they sell the CHK K member brace specifically for power shifting into third. Do you have that? I feel like I remember a thread where you were discussing it. Anyhow... I am just thinking, the BMW and the subie may have been easier to shift because they have less torque. The tranny is going to be more twisted in a mustang during hard accelleration. Not only that, but in the subie, I am not even sure if the tranny is mounted in between the front seats, so the torque may be a whole other direction.

And... if you dont have the Hurst handle on, it may be harder to shift. The hurst handle is longer, so you have more leverage and can put more muscle into it easier --like the difference between a wrench and a breaker bar, (though obviously not that extreme).

Bottom line, if your having trouble shifting, it is likely a car problem, (be that tranny oil, shifter, or brace) I dont think shifting is supposed to be very difficult.

The Mustang will be harder to shift because of the live axle design. Your drivetrain is basically in limbo with the motion of the rear axle and the engine torquing. On an IRS vehicle like the BMW or the Subaru the only thing you have to worry about is engine torque up to an extent since everything else is pretty much bolted down.

That said I also would like to know how the unit looks like installed poperly I have the Hurst T1A design which is either some kind of prototype or one of those dealer package units. It basically looks more like the V6, I bet that flimsy rail it has up front doesn't do a whole lot for precision during hard shifts. That and it rattles constantly under torque. Pretty furstrating at times.

Our Hurst worked like a dream. Can't miss a gear. Just changed transmission from a 4r to a glide...think we're still sticking with a Hurst?
