Hey guys, I know this question has been beat to death. just have a quick version of it. from what I can gather by reading other articles, I believe all I need to do is buy a crossmember for my situation. I have an 86 5.0 as a donor car, the frame is bent and the rest of the body needs too much work, the engine and transmission are fine. am I correct in thinking I can use the cable clutch, transmission. Yoke, and of course the transmission from this car, whitch just leaves the Transmission mount that I need. is that right?

Thanks

yep....except you will need some type of cable quadrant...mustang steve sells one that welds to the top of the stock pedal...others have adapted aftermarket 5.0 quadrants(not the stock plastic one, note:I tried adapting a steeda quadrant...it did not work, I am going to go with a mustang steve quadrant myself) also, one other thing...I hear complaints about he angle being incorrect on some of the aftermarket crossmembers...I adapted a SN95 mount myself, I welded brackets to the framerail which I then bolted the SN95 unit to(I know I use a T45, but all the SN95s use the same crossmember, from 3.8s,5.0s,and 4.6Ls) so if you do buy an aftermarket x-member, make sure to check your drivetrain angle before hooking up the driveshaft and driving down the street, you may need to modify it

OK so a cable quadrent, is it possible to use the stock pedal from the 86 in the 66, then I could use the stock cable quaderent from the 86.

I will check out the crossmember from the 86, maybe I can just fab something up using that.

Thanks

It's be easier to just weld on a quadrant from a kit like that offered from Mustang Steve (or just make one yourself). I'd also suggest that you convert over to a roller bearing set up when you do this (Mustang Steve sells a kit or you can just make it yourself). It really depends on how strong you are in the engineering department.

As for the crossmember, all that matters is that you maintian the correct pinion angle. Ron Morris sells a crossmember that was design for the conversion.

You can use your stock 66 Z bar and cluch linkage if you want. Just need to mod the bellhousing to add the pivot piont and then use your 66 clutch fork. I have one car set up this way and the other with the Mustang Steve pedal and cable kit. You have to bend the bottom of your cowl from under the dash to make clearance for the cable with this kit. It will not show but is a pain in the A** and I didn't like using the hammer on my restoration.

well change in plans. the engine in my 66 started smoking, it's my daily driver so now I will be taking the 5.0 motor and tranny as one unit and putting it in the 66. will keep it fuel injected too, just need to mod the fuel sending unit for a re-turn line, and add an external fuel pump. seems cheaper then getting another engine.

Maybe there is something wrong with my Z-bar set up, but I have had it pop out of place under hard exceleration. that's why I was going to use the T-5 bellhousing and clutch set up.

There is something wrong with your Z bar. Thousands of these cars have been road and drag raced, and it is not a common problem. My car has been driven hundreds of thousands of miles, autocrossed, drag raced, no problem. This is NOT my car, but it does have a Z bar:

Ok, I have the 5.0 motor and trans out of the 86. I removed the computer and one side of the wireing harness, quick question. I have the wireing harness that plugs into the computer and comes out on the passenger side, to me it looks like the main harnes. there is a second harnes that goes through firewall on the drivers side. the only thing in that whole harness that I think I would need is the plug that goes into the coil. Not sure what to do there, anyone know if I need that whole harness or if I can re-wire something a little different.

Thanks

It is also possible, and quite easy, to use the original clutch linkage for the 66. I prefer this, not too keen on modifying the firewall. Your 5.0 bell gets an adapter for the fulcrum, and a bracket for the equalizer gets added to the side of the engine, otherwise is stone-stock. All available new.

Yea I am planning on keping the fuel injection. I basicly have all the other stuff figured out. just need to know if there is a way to wire the coil plug into the main harness or if I need to pull out the other harness.

Thanks

you won't just need a return line system, you're going to need an entire high pressure fuel line system.

as for the wiring, the harness on the left dr side is the headlight harness. All you'll need is to modify the ecu harness....

try fordfuelinjection.com they sell complete ready to go harnesses for about $500 plug and play, no bull****. that's the path I'm going to go.

I spent an enormous amount of time scanning the entire 86 mustang electrical shop manual (the ford manual)

if you plan on using the 86 harness, this book will be your bible.

yea I know I needed the high pressure fuel system, just needed to figure out how to get the return line pluged into the tank, what I did was drilled a whole into the stock fuel pickup, and silver solderd a pipe in there. it's strong and has no leaks as of right now. of course I haven't driven it yet. still trying to figure out the wireing. I have a high pressure external fuel pump I will be mounting right next to the fuel pickup, maybe 4 or 5 inches away from the tank. and I have 28 feet of nylon fuel injection fuel hose so that should take care of the fuel system.

well I need to wire in the coil wire into the main harness because on the 86 the coil wire was hooked up to the left side headlight harness. looks like I will be buying that book. a lot cheaper then spending the 500 bucks. I have plenty of Tylonal for the head aches.
