im looking at putting some gt40 heads on my car(cant afford any aluminum heads) and a cam. my question is what would be a good cam to put in with the most lope? i looked into the thumpr series but ive been told not to. so any input would be great. gt40 is about the only set of heads i could get for 500 correct?

Is your main goal out of a cam its lope? You could always have your pistons notched and run an x cam. That'll lope pretty good.

If you don't want to notch the pistons, a B cam might get you the sound you are looking for and it SHOULD clear. Measure to make sure though.

As far as the heads go, you can try to get a set of used gt40's as cheap as possible because you should get them checked out by a machine shop. Another alternative would be ProComp or Patriot Performance. They aren't the greatest heads, but they are better than a gt40 and iirc, you can pick up either one for under $800.
For cam selection, you could also call Comp tech lines and tell them what you have and what you are trying to accomplish. If you just waant to get an idea, comp has posted it's cam quest software for free.

keep the stocker and unplug a vacuum line. lopes like crazy. will have the same effect on power as throwing in an alphabet cam too.

seriously aside from gt40 heads what is the rest of your combo looking like? there are more variables here that need to be addressed before anyone can offer any cam suggestions....

well i bought the car about 2 weeks ago. i was told it was a 308. from what i can tell by looking at it, it has stock heads, shortys. so im guessing i need to take it apart to see what alls done? i talked to a guy i work with about getting some gt40s with roller rockers already mounted for about 300 bucks not sure about the specs. from driving my car it seems to be an extremely strong 5.0. it could be the retardedly loud exhaust and the 4.11 gears throwing me off.

Price would depend on the shop, but around my way its $75 to notch all 8 pistons.

Or.....You can do as I did and notch them yourself. All it cost me was 2 used 2.02 and 1.60 valves, some 80 grit belt sandpaper, and about an hour of my time.

Ill try and post some pictures of the process later on.

well i been looking around and people say notching yourself isnt too bad.i found some gt40s worked over with 1.7 roller rockers for 3, i can prob talk him down from that. anybody know anything about the thumpr series? the one i want says i need 9.5 to 1 compression, do i have this? will the gt40s give me this? i know its alot of questions, but you guys have already built these motors and i have not. also will gt40s fit on a 351w? i can get a windsor for free.

j/k, btw... ive never had problems clearing an X cam with stock heads and pistons (uncut). just dont use 1.7 rockers with it! you can use either a B or E with 1.7's with no trouble

I suggested the flycutting to be safe. I had the X and still flycut. 542 lift... isn't that cutting it kinda close? what do you mean by j/k btw?
