Hey guys,
Just browsing through the American Muscle website looking at parts I cant afford right now and wishing I could when I stumbled upon American Muscles own short throw shift for only $65!? Anyone ever use this shifter? I mean I am really hesitant to even consider purchasing it because of how low the price is and worried it will be a peice of crap. But I mean 65 dollars thats a steal if its actually a good peice of equipment. Just looking for any feedback or info on the product if anyone has any.

Thanks

It seems to have good reviews on the website. And many of the non MGW/Pro 5.0 are produced by one company (I forget who, and I may be wrong..) and then powdercoated the specific companies color and so on. If you don't have one already I would suggest getting this one. Any kind of shifter is money well spent and it even has shift stops for transmission insurance!

Yes its a Great shifter! I had one on my old 94gt and couldn't have been happier. I'll even go so far as to say i Almost liked it better than my MGW. GET IT! you won't regret it. Just because something is cheap doesn't mean its a crappy product!

1st thing dont trust amerian muscle's reviews i posted a negative review on a catback i bought on their and somehow it never showed up in thier reviews???? hmmm wonder why....cant beat the price 65 bucks for a shifter personally i like hurst and b&m (hurst better though)

i would only get a pro 5.0.....

The shifter hes talking about is an exact replication of the pro 5.0....i should know i had one

IMHO theres some things worth spending a lot of money on and some stuff thats just not. When you can get a quality aftermarket shifter for 65$ versus spending 200+ for one of the more well name brands, well its just a waste of money to me, money that can be spent on more meaningful mods. Its like the classic debate between the 400$ accufab tb/plenum combo and the 200$ proffessional products one, or the 300$ cold air kit and the 75$ one...they all serve their purpose and just because something is expensive doesn't mean its worth the money, just like because something is in-expensive it doesn't mean its a piece of junk...

Yea when I was reading the review on the website I noticed only two bad reviews making me think they dont really post them all. I dunno for 65 bucks even if its not that great I mean how can you beat the price?

thanks stangman11 for posting this thread haha, i have looked through american muscles website for short throw shifters and just seen the pro 5.0 and the steeda ect. i had never seen this shifter for 65 bucks. i ordered the shifter last night and the white retro 5 spd shift knob (white retro coolest shift knob ever imho) i will post what i think of the shifter in a few days when it gets here and installed :nice:

I would not use shift stops with the t-45 or tr-3650 tremec built shift stops into these transmissions and I have seen lots of customers destroy a transmission with improperly adjusted shift stops.

I have a pro5.0 shifter FS right now that came out of a mach 1 that the guy destroy the transmission with the shift stops. He traded the car in so I ended up with the shifter. I had to cut the stops out because they were bent from getting slammed and I could not get them out.

I thought the T5/T45 both didn't have shift stops built into those trans's? I know the 3650 does, but I didn't think that the other ones did.

I have my Pro 5.0 that I bought used out of a turboed Fox that had at least 100 passes on the trans., and I adjusted the stops properly and I don't have any issues with the car going into gear...

We do post negative reviews on the site, but we do have some guidelines for them. We won't post a review with profanity, or one that's blatantly bashing us or a vendor. Negative reviews written with family-friendly language get posted, though, and they can be a useful tool for us. If a product has a lot of negative reviews for the same reason, we forward those reviews to a manufacturer so they can correct the issue. We're not unwilling to post negative comments, so long as they're useful, rather than just profane. :)

AMStanger, thanks for the wise words, that does make alot of sense I do realize your running a business and need to set boundries. Regardless I will most likely be ordering that shifter from you in the near future.

Hillbillie5.0 let me know once you get the shifter how it works out for you just for my knowledge. So far all I have heard are really great things keep me posted on the results.

well i recieved my shifter last week and threw it in that night in the dark using the led keychain light on my keys so i didnt take any pics haha. but i am very impressed with the shifter, as far as i could tell it looks very nicely made. the shifting on my car is 1000 times beter, no more hitting my knuckles on the radio:D its very nice an tight, and the shifts are SHORT. i havent used mgw, steeda, pro 5.0 ect so i cant compare. my last short throw on my 90 gt was a hurst and this one is a lot beter. my only complaints, i wish the shifter handle was shaped so that the knob was a little closer to me. i am 6'2" so my seat is slid prety far back, and the shifter is a little bit of a reach, its not worse than it was stock, i was just hoping it would bring the shifter back a little, like i think it is mgw that has a handle that brings the knob like 2 inches back or something. also i ordered the 5 spd retro white shift ball for 79-04 and the threads on it are to small for it to thread onto my new shifter, so im using the stock knob. the stock knob from a 2000 fits fine, the one i ordered is for 79-04. one would be led to believe that the new one should fit but i guess not.

overall i would say that you cant beat it for 65 bucks! but if you order a shift ball that cost almost as much as the shifter and it dosent fit, throw it at somebodys head.

any aftermarket shifter is better than the shifter shaped, (p)leather wrapped, pile of hippopotamus feces ford used as the stock shifter in these cars. while i personally havent had the experience (thank god), i have heard of a few people missing the 2-3 shift and bending shift forks due to the vague-ness while racing.

congrats on the purpose, im glad it is working well for you!

side note: i have owned both the tri-ax and the MGW....i thought the tri-ax was far superior to this MGW i have now. it felt more solid and precise.
