Need Power Steering Advice

Not manual friendly with stock bellcrank clutch, but I will be using one in my 68 auto and tossing out the manual rack that's in it.

I don't have their integrated power steering gearbox, but their remanufactured stock unit.

My original post was made long before the integrated box was announced.

Something's not right, then, because your granny should be able to cruise the highway with one hand on the wheel. Dead play in the center means either the gearbox is way too loose (not likely, if you were careful) or the spool is travelling too far in the valve, which is likely.

Hey, is the rag joint tight?

Hmm, I'll look into the rag joint, but is there a test to tell whether the slop is in the box or the control valve?

Sure. With the engine running, wiggle the steering wheel a couple inches, which you described as your "play". If the pittman arm is moving smoothly with no hesitation, the gearbox is OK. If the stops and starts moving, even though the wheel is moving smoothly, it's the box or the rag. Then look at the rag while your trusty assistant moves the wheel again. This does not mean the box is dead. That would be rare on a power steering car. You would need to follow the exact procedure in the FSM, don't just start wonking on the adjustments.

If the gearbox is OK, then you have to do the valve. Well, there's always a small chance the cylinder is screwed up.
