starter problems with '94, help!

I have been having starter problems with my '94 Cobra for as long as I can remember. I have owned the car for about 4 years and Ive had at least 4 starters in it. The car just loves to burn through starters. I put a new starter in it last week and I just went to get in the car and the new starter is crap already. Does anyone know what the problem could be? Could it be something to do with my aftermarket flywheel? Any help would be awesome.

One look at your signature points me in the right direction. Longtubes are notorious for coming realll close to the starters in our cars. :notnice: That could kill one in no time.

funny you mention that, when i was replacing the starter last week I noticed for the first time that the LTs are practically touching the starter. are you saying the heat from the headers is killing the starters?

Bingo. Header wrap or after market starters, could fab up a heat shield... I've never had the problem so perhaps someone who's experienced can chime in with pictures.

:nice: That'd be the problem, OP - most definitely. It's real common for 5.0 guys throwing LT's on their cars to kill starters. I had a friend of mine with a fox who killed them once a week. He got a mini-starter, and also wrapped the header to solve the issue. If you're looking for the 'cleanest' look, I believe Adam95gt on here bought LT's from Accufab that were made to fit and clear the starter, but I'm not positive on that.

no doubt longtubes could be the culprit, however, just curious as to what is happening to said starters??

I was having some trouble with mine being intermittent, wound up being a loose ground. Just some food for thought....the parts stores will throw them on a tester, or when one goes bad.... give it power (spare battery or just use some jumpers) and a ground see what happens, might help in troubleshooting if it persists...just a thought...

good luck
